JR Motorsports Hawkeye Dirt Tour heads Lee County’s Liberty Cup card

DONNELLSON, Iowa (June 27) – A win at Lee County Speedway helped Mark Elliott to an IMCA series championship a decade ago.

He’d like to see history repeat itself when the JR Motorsports Hawkeye Dirt Tour for IMCA Modifieds travels to Donnellson for the Thursday, June 30 Liberty Cup special.

“We’ve been down there eight to 10 times over the years. I ran a Stock Cat at Lee County and did very well in that,” said Elliott, whose July 24, 2001 win there figured toward his 2001 Best of the Midwest Series crown. “I think my best finish there in a Modified has been a third or fourth.”

“It’s a fun little track,” added Elliott, winner of the HDT feature last week at Cresco and now third in the series point standings. “I really enjoy racing at Donnellson.”

The Modified feature pays $1,000 to win and is a qualifying event for the 2012 Fast Shafts All-Star Invitational ballot.

Liberty Cup sponsors are Pepsi, Budweiser and Mohrfeld Electric of Fort Madison. Preferred Auto Sales of Lockridge has added $200 to the IMCA Sunoco Stock Car and the Karl Chevrolet Northern SportMod purses, upping first place money for both divisions to $700.

Modifieds and Stock Cars will earn national, regional and Allstar Performance state points; SportMods get national and state points.

Pit gates open at 4 p.m. and the grandstand opens at 5:30 p.m. Thursday. Hot laps are at 7 p.m. with racing to follow.

Grandstand admission is $12 for adults, $5 for students and free for youngsters five and under. Pit passes are $25.

More information about the fourth annual Liberty Cup is available by calling 319 528-4301 or 319 835-5523 on race day. The track website is www.leecountyspeedway.com.
