Macomb Raceway improvements well underway, Late Models return

MACOMB, Ill. (April 19) -  Mother Nature has finally cooperated at least a little bit with the new ownership and management at Macomb Raceway. As a result, many of the planned improvements have begun to take shape at the facility.

Among the improvements 350 tons of clay where added to the racing surface Wednesday afternoon. The dirt was moved and used to fill low spots in the track and also level the banking in each of the turns. The clay placed on the track has made a visible improvement in the middle of and entry to each corner.Posts have also been replaced on the backstretch to strengthen the backstretch wall and old guardrail will be replaced with new. The backstretch and frontstretch walls will both be painted prior to opening night.

The lower set of bleachers have been completely torn out and replaced, crews Thursday were putting foot boards on the new lower section of bleachers. Fans will notice that the new section will not be painted when they enter the track. With the use of treated lumber they will settle and season for one year before they are painted.

New fencing has been put up around the north end of the race track near the parking lot. The pit entrance is also going to be moved, from its previous location to the north end of the existing pit area. There will also be several hundred tons of rock brought in to form driveways in the parking lot.

Painting at the facility is scheduled to begin April 27 and hopefully be finished April 28 as crews will be working on the facility during practice and after on that Saturday.

Late Models Return!
