Guldenpfennig Gets a “Stroke” of Good Luck
By Brad Hines

EAST MOLINE, IL (July 1) - On a beautiful Sunday evening nearly 100 cars packed the pits to compete on the high banks at Quad City Raceway. It was also the Street Stock Challenge for our Fields of Pizza Street Stocks. They would be running the $250 to win. The Builders World IMCA Late Models were also running for the Silvis Independent Hard Charger Award.

The order of events was changed up this week so the Stout Distributing 4 Cylinders were up first with their heat races. Todd Sibley in the 125 won heat one and Wade Dahl in the D26 took heat two.

The Fields of Pizza Street Stocks hit the track next with two heats. The 00 of Rob Henry won the first one and Aaron Burroughs in the 68A won the second heat.

The A-Modifieds came up next. Matt Stein in the 53 took heat one, Kevin Blum in the 1 won heat two, and Doug Crampton won the third heat race.

The Builders World IMCA Late Models were next with three heat races. Eric Gustaf in the 90 won the first heat, Hershel Roberts in the 58 won heat two, and Andy Nezworski in the 7 won heat three.

The Best Choice Meat Market / Racers Edge B-Modifieds ran their three heat races last. Craig Crawford in the 29 won heat one, Brad Pershy in the 15 won heat two, and Greg Durbin in the 8 won heat three.

The 15 car Stout Distributing 4 Cylinder division was up first with their feature event. At the drop of the green the 13 of Shawn Pappas jumped out the lead. In the meantime the Z50 of Joe Zrostlik was making his way through the field. Zrostlik went three and four wide to get by cars. Pappas looked too strong and it didn’t look like Zrostlik was going to get him but lapped traffic slow Pappas and that was the opportunity Zrostlik needed. He got by Pappas and led the last two laps to take home the victory. Pappas would take second followed by the 75 of Lonnie Gibson Jr.

The Fields of Pizza Street Stocks were next. Running for $250 to win everyone knew this was going to be a great race. Once the green flag waved Tony VonDresky took the lead. Right away the 00 of Rob Henry, the 63 of Buck Harmening, and the 3D of Gerald Ward started making their way to the front. After a yellow flag with 8 laps to go it was anyone’s race. VonDresky, Henry, and Harmening were battling 3 wide for the lead. Ward was right there as well. After a yellow for Harmening, who got into the wall, it was a 3 lap dash. Henry grabbed the lead while Ward got around VonDresky. Ward would get right on the bumper of Henry but couldn’t get around Henry before he took the checkered flag. That makes two in a row at QCR for Henry.

The A-Modifieds were next with their 20 car feature. Jeff Morris in the 85 drew the pole so everyone knew he was the man to beat. When the green came out J. Morris took the lead with Brandon Durbin in the 15 on his bumper. Early on the Z of Mike Zemo Jr. was moving through the field very fast. Thad Wilson in the 75W went to the back after getting a flat tire but before long he was right back towards the front. Donovan Lodge in the 32 was moving quickly through the pack too. After several cautions J. Morris proved to be too strong and he would take home the win with B. Durbin second and Wilson who came from 20th to finish 3rd. Jordan Schram in the 92S, who also played the National Anthem with his tuba, came from 18th to take 4th.

The Builders World IMCA took to the track next. The 91 of “Stroker” Mike Guldenpfennig and the 53 of LeRoy Brenner sat on the front row and they wouldn’t look back. For 25 straight laps Guldenpfennig and Brenner were side by side racing hard lap after lap for the lead. Meanwhile, the 6 of Jason Bahrs and the 14 of Mike Murphy Jr. were coming quickly through the field. One of the best battles of the night was for third between Bahrs, Rick Wages in the 11, and Andy Nezworski in the 7. These guys were racing 3 wide lap after lap. Murphy Jr. would catch them and make it a four car battle. Back at the front everyone was on the edge of their seat has Guldenpfennig and Brenner put on an outstanding show. Two weeks prior the Guldenpfennig lead every lap except the last one after his motor went out on him so once the white flag came out Sunday everyone was holding their breath. Guldenpfennig would hold off Brenner and took his first ever IMCA Late Model feature. Brenner took second followed by Nezworski. Bahrs would take home the Silvis Independent Hard Charger Award, which is $100 in free fuel.

The Best Choice Meat Market / Racers Edge B-Modifieds were the last feature of the night. Right away Greg Durbin in the 8 took the lead. Craig Crawford in the 29 and Brad Pershy in the 15 immediately started their march to the front. Before long Durbin, Crawford, and Pershy were first, second, and third and pulling away from the pack. Lap after lap Crawford and Pershy were on Durbin’s bumper. When the white flag waved Crawford was right with Durbin and at the checkered flag they were side by side. Durbin got the win with Crawford second and Pershy third.

Everyone from Stuart Motorsports, Inc. would like to thank all the fans, drivers, and sponsors for making Sunday a huge success.

The next event will be the 1st Annual Bud Bash. The UMP Summer Nationals will take center stage at the Quad City Raceway. It will be stop 23 on their 28 date schedule. With this race coming so close to the end of the series, this race could have major impact on determining the champion of the series. Many late model legends have been champions of this series. It should be very exciting seeing the Summer National regulars race side by side with the best late model drivers in the eastern Iowa and western Illinois area for $6,000 to win and $500 to start.

Also racing on July 8th will be the Builders World IMCA Late Models, A-Modifieds, Best Choice Meat Market / Racers Edge B-Modifieds, and the Fields of Pizza Street Stocks. All the support classes that night will be running for season points.
