Wilson Wins Thrilling 17th Annual Barb Heinz Memorial

ALEDO, IL (July 22) - On a beautiful night in Aledo, IL, some of the best A-Modifieds in the area took to the track to race for the prestigious Barb Heinz Memorial Race. Also racing were the Street Stocks, 4 Cylinders, Mod Lites, B-Modifieds, and Cruisers.

The night got around way with two heat races in the Street Stock division. Jerry Pratt in the 11 and Rob Henry in the 00 won the heat races. The 4 Cylinders were next with their heat race and the K2 of Jeremy Kingsley won that. The Mod Lites ran their heat next and Gregg Rossell in the 77 took that heat. It was now time for the three heat races in the A-Modifieds. Heat one went to the 86 of Jeff Morris, heat two went to John Bull in the 27, and heat three went to Thad Wilson in the 75. Next up were the B-Modifieds. Nick Hixson in the 2N won the first heat and Jake Waterman in the 10 won the second heat. The Cruiser heat race win went to the 10G of Craig Griffin.

It was feature time and the Street Stocks were up first. At the drop of the green the 68A of Aaron Burroughs took the early lead with the 000 of Tony VonDresky and the 11 of Jerry Pratt on his bumper. Burroughs, VonDresky, and Pratt were going two and three wide for the lead, lap after lap. A yellow came out with 10 laps to go and on the restart Burroughs slipped allowing Pratt to get around him and Rob Henry in the 00 took advantage of the restart and got by VonDresky and Burroughs. Pratt had built a small lead while Henry tried to run him down. Pratt was too strong and he went on to take the checkered flag. Henry finished second followed by Burroughs, VonDresky, and David Brandies in the 71.

The 4 Cylinder feature hit the track next. Early in the feature it was a battle of the 13’s. The 13P of A.J. Pappas, 13X of Matt Musgrave, and the 13 of Shawn Pappas raced 3 wide for lead. Meanwhile the K2 of Jeremy Kingsley and the D26 of Wade Dahl were moving towards the front very quickly. Kingsley and Dahl caught the 13’s and got by them and pulled away from the pack. Kingsley would eventually pull away from Dahl too and take home the feature win. Dahl took second followed by Musgrave, S. Pappas, and Virgil Paul Jr. in the 72.

The Mod Lites feature was next on the card. Scott Spink in the 10 took the early lead while the 77 of Gregg Rossell and the 1 of Jeff Norton started their march to the front. J. Norton caught Spink first and was right on his bumper lap after lap. Rossell finally ran them down using the high side and passed them both with two laps to go and went on for the feature win. Spink would hold of J. Norton for second. Shon Sanders in the 4 come in fourth followed by the 007 David Norton.

It was now time for the main event, the A-Modified feature. After the four wide parade lap the green waved and Ray Guss Jr. in the 112 grabbed the lead with Mitch Morris in the 98 running side by side with him. John Bull in the 27 was right on them too. The 43 of Milo Veloz Jr. and the 75 of Thad Wilson were already starting to make their moves to the front. After a yellow Bull got by M. Morris and started challenging Guss for the lead. After a couple of more yellows Doug Crampton in the 40 got side by side with Bull for second. Veloz, Wilson, and now Donovan Lodge in the 32 were almost to the front. After another yellow Veloz managed to catch Guss and pass him for the lead. Bull got by Guss too and was racing side by side with Veloz for the lead. At this point Veloz’s left front tire was bent but he kept racing. Not too long after Veloz took the lead, Wilson was on his bumper. Going into turn three Wilson went low and got by Veloz. Wilson and Veloz started to separate themselves from the rest of the pack. Lodge and Bull were behind them racing neck and neck for the third. Eventually Wilson would pull away from Veloz too and take home the $1000 check. Veloz took second followed by Lodge, Bull, and Guss.

The B-Modified feature got underway with some excitement. On the first lap the 22 of Dustin Begyn took a bad roll on the backstretch but thankfully he was okay. After that was cleaned up Chris Stein in the 53 took the early lead with Kevin Dickey in the 42 right now him. Jake Waterman in the 10 decided to take to the high side of the track and it proved to pay off. Before long Waterman caught Stein and Dickey and went right by them on the top side. Once Waterman got pass them he checked out while Stein and Dickey continued for battle for second. Waterman went on unchallenged for win while Stein pulled away from Dickey for second. Tyler Gilmour took the fourth followed by Perry Gellerstedt in the 39.

The night concluded with the Cruiser feature. Craig Griffin in the 10G was untouchable. He built a large lead and didn’t let up. The race for second was a good one between 2Z of Jerry Pratt and the X42 of Roger Ashby. Ashby would get the better of it. Griffin would go on for the win followed by Ashby, and the 7MC of Cory Logsdon managed to get by Pratt on the last lap for third.
