Illowa Challenge Goes to Zemo

EAST MOLINE, IA. (July 27) - The Illowa Challenge continued Friday night at the Quad City Raceway in East Moline with racing in four divisions. Formally a Hawkeye Raceway tradition, Stuart Motorsports decided to bring the race to QCR. The B-Modifieds, Mod Lites, Street Stocks, and A-Modifieds were in the pits to ready to race Friday night.
The Racers Edge B-Modifieds were up first with two heat races. John Ahlers in the 67 won heat one and the 99 of Doug Curless took heat two.

The Mod Lites made another appearance at QCR and their heats were next. Greg Rossell in the 77 won the first heat and Shon Sanders in the 4 won heat two.
The Fields of Pizza Street Stocks hit the track next. Jerry Pratt in the 11 took heat one and Rob Henry in the 00 won the second heat.

The TMS A-Modifieds were last to run their heats. The 43 of Milo Veloz Jr. won the first heat and Thad Wilson in the 75 won heat two.

After heats were done the Racers Edge B-Modifieds were ready for their feature event. A few yellow flags started the feature but after that Kevin Dickey in the 42 grabbed the early lead with Jake Waterman in the 10 on his bumper. The 67 of John Ahlers was moving towards the front quickly before long he was on Waterman for second. After a couple more yellows, Waterman and Ahlers were right on Dickey for lead. Several times they ran 3 wide for the lead. Finally coming out of turn 4 a puff of smoke came out of Dickey’s 42 and his night was over. Waterman also had a flat tire so he went to the pits and made it back out right before the feature went green again. Ahlers took the lead but Chris Stein in the 53 and Craig Crawford in the 29 were sticking to his bumper. Crawford got around Stein and then set his sights on Ahlers. Crawford used to the bottom to catch Ahlers. After a couple more cautions the race ended under the yellow and checkered and Ahlers took home another B-Modified feature win. Crawford took second followed by Stein, Chad Coyne in the 03 and A.J. Pappas in the 3.

The Mod Lites rolled onto the track next. Scott Spink in the 10 raced to the early lead with 8 of Chuck Mayerhofer and the 007 of David Norton battling for second. D. Norton managed to get by Mayerhofer and he then went to the high side and started challenging Spink for the lead. Once D. Norton got by Spink, he checked out. Mayerhofer got up to second while Greg Rossell in the 77 and the 1 of Jeff Norton battled for third. Rossell held off J. Norton third and they followed Spink to round out the top five. On a side note they went flag to flag and it only took 4 ½ minutes!

Fields of Pizza Street Stocks were ready for their feature next. Right at the drop of the green the 11 of Jerry Pratt and the 7S of Toby Spicer began their battle for first. Pratt was using the bottom of the track while Spicer took to the high side. Lap after lap they were running side by side. Spicer eventually got around Pratt and he took off from there. Spicer went on to take victory with Pratt second. Bruce Fosdyck in the 99 held off the 93 of Matt Werner and the 00 of Rob Henry for third. Their feature too went flag to flag.

It was now the main event, the TMS A-Modified feature race. Doug Crampton in the 40 and Milo Veloz Jr. in the 43 drew one and two and right away began fighting for first with Crampton running up high and Veloz running low. Donovan Lodge in the 32 and the Z of Mike Zemo Jr. began their march to the front too. A few yellows came out and those were the opportunities Lodge and Zemo were looking for. Lap after lap Zemo was challenging Lodge for second while Lodge was challenging Veloz for first. Lodge finally got a run on Veloz going into turns 1 & 2 but they made contact and Zemo saw in opening coming out of 2 and he shot through it and took the lead. Zemo didn’t look back from there and pulled away from Lodge and Veloz. Lodge and Veloz continued racing hard for second lap after lap until the checkered came out. Lodge would take second followed by Veloz, Brett Diercks in the 4D, and Bob Helm in the 1X rounded out the top 5.

Everyone from Stuart Motorsports, Inc. would like to thank all the fans, drivers, and sponsors for supporting Quad City Raceway on Friday night.
