Neal Gets First QCR Win of ’07!!!

EAST MOLINE, IL (Aug. 05) - It was a hot and steamy night at the Quad City Raceway Sunday but the heat didn’t keep the great racing action away. Sunday was also the Quad City Raceway Hall of Fame voting night for the fans. Every adult and senior that entered the grandstands and pits received a ballot to vote for six drivers and one contributor to be inducted into the Quad City Raceway Hall of Fame.

The night got underway with a pair of heat races in the Stouts Distributing 4 Cylinders. “Lunchbox” Dan Keltner in the 27D out of Wapello, IA won heat one and Peoria’s Sean Leatherman in the 7X won the second heat.

The Fields of Pizza Street Stocks were next with three heats. The number 8 of Rick Schriner out of Rock Island took heat one. Davenport’s Tony VonDresky in the 000 won heat two and the 93 of Matt Werner from Geneseo won the third and final heat.

The A-Modifieds took to the track next. The 92S of Jordan Schram from Sterling won heat one and Colona’s Brandon Durbin won the second heat race.

In the Builders World IMCA Late Models they ran two heat races. Last week’s feature winner Nate Beuseling, in the 46 out Coal Valley, won heat one and Ely, IA’s Terry Neal won heat race two.

The heat races finished up with a couple from the Racer’s Edge B-Modifieds. Moline’s Craig Crawford in the 29 won the first heat and the number 8 of Greg Durbin, out of East Moline, won the second heat.

The Stouts Distributing 4 Cylinder rolled onto the track next for their feature event. Sean Leatherman in the 7X drew the pole and he took advantage of that, leading every lap and taking home his first QCR victory. He held off an early challenge from the 125 of Todd Sibley and then a late challenge from the K2 of Jeremy Kingsley. Shawn Pappas in the 13 had a great run late too. Pappas managed to take second place away from Kingsley at the line. Dan Keltner in the 27D took fourth with Sibley rounding out the top five.

The Fields of Pizza Street Stocks were next and for the first time this season they had a caution filled feature. When the yellows weren’t flying the racing was great. Matt Werner in the 93 took the early lead but it didn’t take long before Tony VonDresky in the 000 and Brian Bodin in the 96 made it 3 wide for lead. Rob Henry in the 00 was right on their bumpers too. The 03 of Chris Hambright was moving towards the front very quickly too. Werner held the challenges and maintained his lead but now Henry had moved into second and was right on Werner. Hambright finally got to the front and made it 3 wide for lead with Werner and Henry. Hambright would get by Henry and then races door to door with Werner for the lead. Hambright used the bottom most of the night but Werner was able to hold him off on the high side and win his second feature at QCR this season. Henry would take third followed by Aaron Burroughs in the 68A, who came from the 16th starting spot, and Rick Schriner in the 8 rounded out the top five.

The A-Modifieds were up next with their feature event. Todd Bates in the 49 would take the early lead with Jordan Schram in the 92S running the low side challenging Bates. Meanwhile, Jeff Morris in the 86 moving to the front very quickly and before long he was in the lead. The 1 of Kevin Blum, coming from the 10th starting spot, was able to run down J. Morris. They ran several laps side by side. J. Morris was down on the bottom with Blum running the high side. After a yellow Milo Veloz Jr. in the 43 went to the extreme high side and motored right by Blum and J. Morris to grab the lead. Veloz wouldn’t look back and after a couple of more cautions he would win another QCR feature. Blum would take second followed by a battle of the Durbins between Brandon in the 15 and Jerry in the 88. Brandon would take third with Jerry fourth and Schram would rounded out the top 5.

The Builders World IMCA Late Models were next up. Last week’s winner Nate Beuseling was on the front row again this week and appeared to be the man to beat again this week. Terry Neal, in the 28C, challenged Beuseling early but Beuseling held him off and started building a lead. Towards the back of field, Mike Murphy Jr., Shawn Mulvany, and Rob Toland started moving to the front picking off positions left and right. Then yellow flag came out when a billboard on the backstretch fell onto the track. Then out of nowhere while they were lining up on the front stretch for the restarted Beuseling pulled into the pits. Apparently Beuseling’s car began overheating. That was the break Neal needed. R. Toland gave Neal everything he had but Neal held him off lap after lap. R. Toland would follow Neal into turns 1 and 2 and then pull right next to him in turns 3 and 4. Neal would go on to take the win with R. Toland second, Mulvany third, Murphy Jr. fourth, and Adam Oppendike fifth.

The final race of the night was the Racer’s Edge B-Modified feature. After a few cautions Gary Weatherington Jr. in the 21W had the early lead with Craig Crawford right on him. The 83 of Jimmy Comins was right on them in third. Meanwhile, Greg Durbin in the 8 and the 88J Jerry Bailey Jr., who started 12th, were coming to the front. Back up front Crawford took the lead and started pulling away. Durbin finally caught Weatherington Jr. and Bailey Jr. caught Comins. Weatherington Jr. held off Durbin for many laps but Durbin would eventually get by him. It was too late though Crawford had too big of a lead and would go onto his first point’s night win in 4 years. Durbin took second followed by Weatherington Jr., Comins, and Bailey Jr.

As soon as the votes are counted an announcement will be made on who the class of 2007 in the Quad City Raceway Hall of Fame will be.

It was also announced Sunday that September 3rd WDRL race at QCR has been moved to September 2nd.

Everyone from Stuart Motorsports, Inc. would like to thanks all the fans, drivers, and sponsors for making Sunday night a great success. Weekly racing will be back next week on Sunday night with racing in the Stouts Distributing 4 Cylinders, Fields of Pizza Street Stocks, A-Modifieds, Builders World IMCA Late Models, Mod Lites, and Racer’s Edge B-Modifieds.
