Toland Back in Victory Lane at QCR!!!

EAST MOLINE, IL (Aug 12) - On a hot and steamy night at the Quad City Raceway, six divisions pulled into the pits to take to the high banks. Along with the five regular weekly divisions the Mod Lites were added to the show.

The Stouts Distributing 4 Cylinders got the action underway with a pair heat races. Wapello, Iowa’s Geoff Theobald in the 33 took heat one and the D26 of Wade Dahl out of Blue Grass, Iowa took heat two.

Fields of Pizza Street Stocks were next with two more heat races. Princeton, Iowa’s Aaron Burroughs in the 68A won the first heat and Davenport, Iowa’s Tony VonDresky in the 000 won heat two.

The A-Modifieds took to the track next with two heats. Mitch Morris out of Long Grove, Iowa, in the 98 won heat one and Colona, Illinois’ Kevin Blum won the second heat in the 1 car.

The Builders World IMCA Late Models ran their heats next. The 46 of Nate Beuseling out of Coal Valley, Illinois won heat one and Bettendorf, Iowa’s Rob Toland won heat two.

The Mod Lites ran their heat next with Moline, Illinois’ Shon Sanders winning that.

The Racer’s Edge B-Modifieds finished up the heat races with two more. Jerry Bailey Jr. out of East Moline, Illinois in the 88J won heat one and the 75 of Colona, Illinois’ Chad Tomlinson took the second heat.

It was now feature time and the Stouts Distributing 4 Cylinders were up first. Dan Keltner in the 27D grabbed the early lead with Geoff Theobald in the 33 and Taco Jones in the 1 right behind him battling for second. Shawn Pappas in the 13 made his move towards the front very quickly and was right on Theobald and Jones. Pappas would get by both Theobald and Jones and set his sights on Keltner. Wade Dahl in the D26 had made his way up to the front and was racing Theobald for third. Back up front Keltner and Pappas were still fighting for the lead. Keltner was running high and Pappas was running low. At one point Keltner looked like he was going to pulling away but Pappas wouldn’t have that and got right back on Keltner’s bumper and on the last lap coming out of turn 4 Pappas got by Keltner and took the checkered flag. Dahl took third followed by Theobald and the 125 of Todd Sibley.

The Fields of Pizza Street Stocks were next. When the green flag waved Rob Henry in the 00 wasted no time getting to the front. Once he had the lead he didn’t look back. Tony VonDresky in the 000 jumped into second quickly. Chris Lawrence in the 8L came from his sixth starting spot and started challenging VonDresky for second. Lap after lap the raced hard for second with Lawrence running the bottom and VonDresky running the top side. The race went flag to flag and Henry led every lap. Lawrence would get by VonDresky and hold him off to take second. Aaron Burroughs in the 68A had an excellent run coming from the ninth starting spot to finish fourth and the 11M of Tom Maupin rounded out the top five.

The A-Modifieds hit the track next for their feature event. Mitch Morris in the 98 draw the pole and he took advantage of it right away taking the early lead. Doug Crampton in the 40 was right on M. Morris. Meanwhile the 1 of Kevin Blum, the 86 of J. Morris, and the 43 of Milo Veloz Jr. were all coming towards the front fast. Before long Blum and J. Morris got by Crampton and were battling for second with J. Morris running low and Blum running high. Then right at the halfway point while leading M. Morris’ car let go bring out the yellow. Once they went back to running Blum took the lead and started building a lead. Then another yellow came out setting up a green, white, checkered finish. When the green waved for the two lap dash Blum kept his lead with J. Morris right on him. Going down the backstretch on the white flag lap smoke began coming out of Blum’s car. Blum would hold on though and win another feature. J. Morris took second followed by Crampton, Veloz Jr., and Bob Stogdell in the 50.

The Builders World IMCA Late Models roared onto the track next. The feature got underway with some excitement. Coming out of turn 4 to take green flag to start the race some cars got into each causing the “Big One” on the front stretch. Everyone was okay. Seven cars were involved; Mike Murphy Jr. in the 14, Terry Neal in the 28C, Ron Gustaf in the 90X, Hershel Roberts in 58, Eric Gustaf in the 90, Jason Bahrs in the 6, and Rob Toland in the 39. Murphy Jr., Neal, R. Gustaf, and Roberts were all done for the night. Murphy Jr. went off in the ambulance. Neal’s car appeared to have a lot of front end damage. Roberts’ car seemed to get the worst of it. The crowd was relieved once Hershel got out of the car. Then to show what kind of sportsmanship Hershel Roberts has, while he was waiting for his car to be towed to the pits he walks over to Rob Toland’s car and pulls some sheet metal off Rob’s right rear tire. After that was all cleaned up Bahrs, R. Toland, and E. Gustaf were the only cars able to make it back and join the rest of the field. Once they back to racing action Stephan Kammerer in 77 took the early lead with Nate Beuseling in the 46 right on him. R. Toland was wasting no time moving through the field very fast. A yellow came out for Kammerer and that was all R. Toland needed. After that R. Toland got by Beuseling and pulling away from the pack. Shawn Mulvany in the 70 would get by Beuseling too and pulling away with R. Toland. R. Toland went unchallenged the rest of the way and when he took the checkered flag, Bahrs who was in the third was only going into turn one. Mulvany took second followed by Bahrs, Beuseling, and Adam Oppendike in the 29 rounded out the top five.

The Mod Lites were up next. Right away the 4 of Shon Sanders and the 007 of David Norton began fighting for first. Sanders was down low and Norton was up high. The 88 of Jerame Mowery and the 10 of Scott Spink were right behind them racing hard for third. You could throw a blanket off the top four that’s how close they were. Then while leading the Norton went for a spin coming out of turn four. That was the break Sanders was looking for. Once they went back to green flag racing Sanders pulled away from the field while Spink and Mowery raced for second. Sanders went on to take the win followed by Spink, Mowery, Norton, and Rob Guss in the 91.

The Racer’s Edge B-Modifieds brought the racing program to an end with a flag to flag feature. Chris Stein in the 53 took the lead right away with Steve Gustaf Jr. in the J28 right on him. Greg Durbin in the 8 and Jerry Bailey Jr. in the 88J began moving towards the front. Durbin would catch up to Gustaf Jr. and Stein. Durbin got by Gustaf Jr. but by this time Stein had built a nice lead and Durbin couldn’t catch him. Stein went on to lead every lap for his first career win. Durbin took second followed by Bailey Jr., Gustaf Jr. and Craig Crawford in the 29.

Everyone from Stuart Motorsports, Inc. would like to thank all the fans and drivers for coming out and supporting us on such a hot night. We also like to thank all our sponsors. Without all the fans, drivers, and sponsors none of this would be possible.

We will be back next week with our regular weekly racing program plus the Mod Lites. Don’t forget there only two more point nights.
