Prime Weather for Annual Firecracker 40’s

MACON, IL (June 28) - After a week of fair weather, Macon Speedway was primed for an electric night of racing Saturday night. The track hosted its annual Firecracker 40’s for Chevrolet Late Models and BARBECK Communications Modifieds. Feature racers were running were bigger prizes, ($1,200 to win Late Models; $600 to win Modifieds) and nobody was letting up. St. Louis Cardinals’ mascot Fred Bird was on hand posing for pictures and giving away some Macon Speedway swag. Macon Speedway also shut off all the track lights for the fireworks show during the intermission.

The Late Model Firecracker 40 was one of the most anticipated at Macon Speedway. Four Macon Speedway veterans, Kyle Logue, Cory Daugherty, Butch Smith and Jayme Zidar, gave the fans one of the best heat races of the season, running two wide and bumper-to-bumper. Now, all four were starting up front in the feature.

Cory Daugherty broke through for his first career Macon Speedway feature win in the Chevrolet Late Models. Daugherty picked up a cool $1,200 for the Late Model Firecracker 40. Daugherty's car outclassed the competition on the high line. Some pesky lapped traffic gave Kyle Logue to make a challenge at the lead, but Daugherty stood strong and led 39 out of the 40 laps.

"The car was perfect up top. And I would just drop the hammer on the straightaways and it would just go. I'm excited. I'm ready for fifty more laps." Daugherty said.

Chris Dick took advantage of the late wreck between Daugherty and Logue to move to second place and Dennis Vandermeersch finished third.

Dave Crawley took home a $600 prize for winning the Firecracker 40 for the BARBECK Communications Modifieds. Crawley held on to the lead throughout most of the race. He inherited the lead after Curt Rhodes had to exit the race early. Rhodes took the lead away from Scott Jones on lap one but had to pull off the track in turn two.

Longtime Macon racer Al Crawley has his street stock running. With a feature win tonight, his second of the year, Crawley has been near the front in every race since his return to the track. Crawley just barely beat out the #95 of Steve Ewing on the final turn to win.

The Sportsman feature was dominated by Mike Pickering’s #9. When Pickering’s high line is running well, there’s very little chance anyone will catch him. Jeff Graham held off a good run Rick Roedel for second place.

Mike Pundt broke the Joe Reed feature winning streak in the hornets. This marked Pundt’s first pro hornet win of the season. Bruce Dulgar was back in his usual form. Dulgar had been struggling after a rough wreck a few weeks ago, but finished second tonight in front of the very fast car of Joe Reed.

Jeff Gill picked up his second amateur hornet win.
