Richie Hedrick and Denny Schwartz Take Victories under a Full Moon Friday at Farmer City Raceway
by Dan Stewart

FARMER CITY, IL (August 15) - Friday evening might have been a full moon, but Daren Friedman turned in the fastest time of the twenty two late models on hand at 12.813 seconds. The first heat went to Daren Friedman over Scott Bull, Joe Harlan and Mike Glasscock. The second heat was a runaway by Richie Hedrick, but second place Derek Chandler had his hands full with Rocky Griffin, and Aaron Ricketts took fourth place. The third heat was a very exciting race between points leader Eric Smith and Jimmy Dehm. Smith and Dehm swapped the lead numerous times, with Smith holding off Dehm for the win. The duo was followed to the checkers by Don Cisco and George Scheffler. The semi feature went to Chris Dick over Donny Walden.

The feature had Friedman on the inside front row and Hedrick starting outside. Hedrick took off right from the start, riding the high groove and was never headed. Friedman stayed with Hedrick the first few laps, then Scott Bull made a charge that almost paid off late in the race. They survived two cautions, and Hedrick went on to collect the checkered flag, followed closely by Eric Smith, Scott Bull, Mike Glasscock, Daren Friedman and Jimmy Dehm.

The Modified class had some great racing going on as well. Jeb Friedman turned in fast time at 14.189 seconds. The first heat went to Chad Osterhoff over Cory Schwengel, Jeb Friedman and Bobby Pearson. The second heat saw defending UMP National champion Denny Schwartz blister the field, followed by Jay Ledford, Randy Huffman and Kevin Hastings. The third heat saw Billy Tuckwell win by quite a distance over Darcey Wey, Justin DeLong, Don Cox and Justin McCoy.

The feature started pretty rough, as the first lap was about to be completed, Billy Tuckwell took a wild vicious tumble on the front stretch, barrel rolling and pirouetting until finally coming to rest on the half mile track in front of the grandstands. Tuckwell walked away unscathed, but the car appeared to be junk. Denny Schwartz would go on to lead the whole twenty lap distance, challenged only on the many restarts by Jeb Friedman, but Schwartz would quickly open up a sizeable lead. Schwartz put his car in victory lane for the first time in two years at this track. Following Schwartz to the line were Jeb Friedman, eighth place starter Randy Huffman, Cory Schwengel, Jay Ledford, Chad Osterhoff, Kevin Hastings, Justin DeLong, Justin McCoy, and Darcey Wey.

The twelve car Sportsman class saw the heats going to Jason Unzicker over Rick Roedell, and John Barnard over Rod Rusher. The feature went to points leader Joel Funk, but he had to earn the win fighting with, and holding off Jason Unzicker, Gary Turpin and Rod Rusher. Chris Anderson finished fifth.

The Street Stock class also only had twelve cars, with the first heat going to Chris Tackett in a close battle over Josh Griffith and Scott Thrasher. The second heat went to Terry Miller after a very spirited battle with Terry Miller and Greg Rubenacker. In the feature, Jim Quinn held off Terry Miller, Greg Rubenacker, Chris Tackett, Josh Griffith and Darrel Lehigh for the win.

The KidModz were once again in town with the heat race going to Bobby Pierce over Kyle Hammer, Zac Bunten and Hurricane Heidi. Bobby Pierce then won the feature, holding off Heidi Goodman.

The Hornets had a full field of twenty two cars on hand. The first heat had an exciting finish, as the three leaders came to the line side by side, the man in the middle edged forward just enough to take the win. Mike Maier just barely took the checkered flag over Jim Wilson and Bo O'Donoghue. The second heat was also exciting, as Stephanie Soberri took a nasty flip in turn one. She also was unhurt. The checkers went to David Reed over Randy Rexroad, Stacy Whitehouse and Joe Reed. Joe Reed then held off his brother David Reed for the feature win.

There were 98 cars in the pits and the headlining late model feature was finished at 10:20 p.m.
