PEORIA, ILL (August 30) - Battles were won and wars lost on Saturday night at the Peoria Speedway.

Saturday night’s races marked the 61st season-points championships.

Season championships were handed out in all five divisions, but only one of the five — Sportsman champion Jason Weyeneth — managed to win his feature as well.

In the Late Model division, Steve Lance Jr. broke away from the pack early and held on for another win over his brother, Tim.
"Toward the end, I wasn’t running as hard as I could on the high side," Steve Lance said. "But then I could sense somebody down low and figured it was him, so I figured I better start pushing."

But Lance’s victory wasn’t enough to overtake Todd Bennett, who brought home his first season championship in nine years after winning five straight from 1995-99.

"We just had a lot better luck this year," Bennett said. "After winning so many in a row, you kind of take it for granted."
In the Modified division, points runner-up Mark Johnson bested season champion Dale Munson in the feature.

"Dale’s a good, clean racer," Johnson said. "It was a heck of a run tonight.

"My congrats to Dale on the points title."

Weyeneth, on the other hand, scooped an extra $100 for winning the Sportsman feature. He led from start to finish.

"A race like that, you just have to hit your marks," Weyeneth said. "Because you have no idea what’s going on behind you."
Bryon Ray took advantage of several key cautions to win the Street Stock feature, but runner-up Scott Schoenner finished as the points champion. Schoenner twice took the lead from Ray in the feature only to see the caution flag come out and the lap not count.

"This is what it’s all about," said Johnson, holding up his large trophy topped by a golden car. "It’s all about the trophies, not the money."

Finally, in the Hornet division, Jeremy Kingsley won, but it wasn’t enough to vault him past Scott VanOppen and Zac Kuhel for the title.

TRACKSIDE:
There will be a benefit for Late Model driver Gerry Reeder Jr. beginning at 5 p.m. today at Mooney’s pub. Reeder is scheduled to undergo a kidney transplant on Sept. 8. The 50-50 drawing raised nearly $1,000 for him on Saturday night.
