“River City Hustler” wins his second Fall Harvest Shootout

EAST MOLINE, IL (Oct 13) - On a beautiful autumn weekend in October, 116 different cars came through the pit gates at the Quad City Raceway to participate in the 3rd Annual Fall Harvest Shootout. This jam packed weekend would see Mini Sprints, $2,000 to win 4 Cylinders, two separate $2,000 to win Northern All-Star Late Model Series features, and a main event of Modifieds battling it out for the $5,000 to top prize.

The Mini Sprints made their second trip to the Quad City Raceway in the 2008 racing season on Saturday night. The 11 year old, Brunson Behning, made it two for two at QCR. Ryan Miller would take the early lead but Brunson wasted little time getting to the front but he didn’t pull away from the pack like he did in his first trip to QCR. This time he had his father, Bryan Behning, chasing him lap after lap. Father had a chance to get by his son late in the race but lapped cars slowed him down and that’s all Brunson needed to take home another victory. Third went to Dan Berends followed by Tracy Hull and Dennis Atchley. Heat race wins went to Bryan Behning and Brunson Behning.

The 4 Cylinders had 34 cars check in and after Friday nights qualifying and two consolations Saturday, the field was down to 20. After an early caution Brannon Beschen would grab the lead with Dan Mohr on his bumper. While they battled up front Jeff Seitz was starting to his move towards the front. Another caution bunched the cars back up but Beschen was too strong and would start to pull away from the field. Seitz would give Mohr everything he could handle for second though with Todd Sibley right on them. Beschen would go onto win and take home the $2,000 check. Mohr took second followed by Seitz, Sibley and Scotty Powell who start 11th. Former UMP 4 Cylinder National Champion, D.J. Werkmeister, also had a great run coming from 19th to finish 6th. The heat race wins went to Sibley, Jeremy Campbell, J.R. Brown, and Mohr. Consolation races went to Joe Wagner and Steven Phillips.

The Northern All-Star Late Model Series ran two features this weekend, one on Friday and one on Saturday. Friday night’s action saw 2008 UMP Late Model National Champion, Dennis Erb Jr. take the early lead with Jason Feger right on him. As the race went on Erb began pulling away with former UMP Late Model National Champion Tony Izzo Jr. on Feger for second. Towards the back Steve Lance Jr. was moving quickly from his 13th starting spot to the front. Back up front Erb was building a huge lead and after Feger pulled off Izzo and 15 year old Brandon Sheppard starting battling for second. Erb would go onto to win with B. Sheppard getting by Izzo on the low side to take second. S. Lance would make it up to fourth and Jaime Zaider would round out the top five. Heat races went to Erb, Tim Lance, and Richie Hedrick.

Saturday night’s racing in the Northern All-Star Late Model Series was equally exciting. Adam Oppendike would jump out to the early lead with Ray Guss Jr., Brandon Sheppard, and Jason Feger right on him fighting for second. Feger and B. Sheppard would get by Oppendike and begin battling side by side for the lead. Feger, on the extreme top side of the track, began to pull away. The race for third was a very good one with Guss, Oppendike, Steve Lance Jr., and Tim Lance all over each other. Meanwhile, Friday night’s Dennis Erb Jr., who wrecked hard in time trials, in Steve Lance Jr.’s back-up was coming through the field very quickly. Feger would prove to be too fast and go onto win with Guss and Lance Jr. running side by side for second with Guss coming out on top. Erb would take fourth followed by T. Lance. Heat race wins went to Oppendike, B. Sheppard, and Guss.

The main event of the night was the $5,000 to win, 40 lap Modified feature race. The 20 car field was a who’s who of Modified racing in the Midwest. Once the green flag waved Kevin Weaver and Kelly Shryock began battling side by side for the lead. After a few laps Weaver started building a lead with Ryan Dolan on Shryock’s bumper for second. After a caution both Shryock and Dolan were all over Weaver for lead but going into turn 3 mechanical problems would end Weaver nights. Dolan would then go to the very top of track right up against the wall and take over the lead with Shryock second.

Towards the back both Gary Cook Jr., who started 12th, and Corey Dripps, who started 14th, began coming to the front very quickly. Ray Guss Jr. also found a very fast groove down around the tires and began moving to the front. Dolan lead until he hit the wall very hard coming out of turn four cutting his tire and ending his night. Shryock took the lead with Guss right on him running the bottom of the track. Guss would take over the lead. Out of no where Dave Cain, who started 16th, found himself in third with laps running then and with two laps to go he take over second and was catching Guss. Cain ran out of laps and Guss would go onto his second Fall Harvest Shootout victory and the $5,000 payday. Shryock would take third followed by Cook and Dripps. Heat race wins went to Steve Arpin, Dolan, Weaver, and Shryock. Consolation races went to Brent Mullins and Dripps.

Stuart Motorsports, Inc. would like to thank all the drivers, fans, and sponsors for making the 3rd Annual Fall Harvest Shootout a success. Racing will continue next weekend at the Quad City Raceway with the 2nd Annual Last Call. Six classes will be racing; $1,000 to win IMCA Late Models, $1,000 to win Modifieds, $1,000 to win B-Modifieds, $1,000 to win Street Stocks, $1,000 to win 4 Cylinders, and the Mod Lites.
