Bennett, Weisser, Siegel, Harrison, and Butterfield Win on First Point Night.

By BEN DIGGLE  of the Journal Star

PEORIA, IL (April 10) - From flips to fights, there was no shortage of excitement on the opening night of points races at Peoria Speedway.  Once the dust settled and the smoke cleared, five feature winners were crowned and the race for the 2010 points championships was on.

The most exciting race of the night came in the Modified division. High schooler Austin May, son of longtime driver Scott May, started on the pole and led the first nine laps of the race by several car-lengths. A series of restarts, however, brought May back to the pack and on lap 10 May drove his car too hard into Turn 4 and spun out. That relegated him to the back of the pack and set up a side-by-side restart with veterans Erik Bruce and Butch Weisser on the front row. Bruce jumped out front on the re-start, but Weisser found his way to the bottom and quickly took the lead from Bruce and drove to the victory.
“I didn’t know where (Bruce) was going to go,” Weisser said. “I knew I wanted to be on either the middle or the bottom, but I had to wait on him.  “There was more moisture on the bottom and as you drifted out from there, it got a little rougher.”  Bruce was second and May fought his way back into the top 10 to finish ninth.

In the Late Model division, Todd Bennett came from the outside of Row 3 on the start to win the feature. “The car’s been great so far and it was good anywhere on the track tonight,” Bennett said. “But the bottom was best. “It was just tough to get down there and find the right groove, because it was tight around the bottom and if you went too low, it got really greasy.” Bennett easily outdistanced Mike Mullvain and Brian Harris for the win.

In the Pro Street division, Paula Harrison debuted a new car and drove it to a feature victory. “It’s like night and day from the old car,” Harrison said. “I have to thank my pit crew, Mark Johnson, Erik Bruce and Todd Bennett, because without all those guys, I’m not here.”

In the Limited Late Model division, Jack Siegel took home the checkered flag, while Kenny Butterfield won the Hornet feature.
