Malmstrom Gets 1st Ever Late Model Feature Win
by: Ed Potter

EAST MOLINE, (MAY 30) - Although the weatherman tried to put the damper on the racing Sunday at the Quad City Speedway with some afternoon showers the races went off as planned.  The first feature to hit the speedway was the Extreme Auto Glass Street Stock fifteen lapper.  First heat winner and front row starter, Ron Marks Jr grabbed the lead on the drop of the green and never looked back for his second win of this season, despite two early cautions.  Pole sitter, Chris Lawrence chased Marks the entire race but had to settle for second.  Rob Nylin was third with Dwaine Hasson fourth and Matt Werner fifth.

Next up was the SNI of Geneseo A Modified twenty lap feature and first heat winner, John Bull used his front row strting spot to his full advantage.  Bull went to the early lead when the first caution flew at lap four.  On the restart five cars piled up in turn one.  Bull went back to the front and led the rest of the way for his first Quad City Speedway win of the year.  One heck of a battle was going on behind Bull between second heat winner, Jason Pershey and Milo Veloz Jr for the second spot.  Veloz ended up taking the spot with Pershey third.  Brandon Durbin was fourth with Mitch Morris fifth.

The thirty lap Sexton Ford IMCA Late Model feature came up next, with pole sitter Gary Webb grabbing the early lead.  At lap three seventh place starter, Todd Malmstrom charged out front.  Despite three cautions during the race to tighten the field back up nobody had anything to get to Malmstrom’s Ford.  Malmstrom went on basically unchallenged to his first ever Late Model victory.  Early in the race Webb and first heat winner, Colby Springsteen had a heck of a fight going on for second, but by the time the checkers flew it was Eric Gustaf taking second place.  Nate Beuseling was third with Ray Guss Jr taking fourth.  Springsteen held on to round out the top five.  Eric Sanders was the other heat winner.

The Verplaetse Excavating IMCA Modified feature went the full fifteen laps without a single caution.  Mark Vervynck used his front tow start to lead flag to flag for his second win of the season.  Heat winner, Andrew Burk was second with Ray Cox Jr coming from the last row to take third.  Craig Crawford was fourth with Greg Durbin fifth.

Another caution free race was the Aaron’s Affordable Towing 4 Cylinders feature.  Heat winner, Chad Tucker started on the pole and never looked back as he led all twelve laps for his first win of the year.  A hard fought battle between Jason Blocker and Justin Veloz also lasted the entire twelve laps with Blocker ending up second and Veloz third.  Jon Scott took fourth as the last car on the lead lap as Tucker started lapping cars on lap five.  Dayton Handel bounded out the top five.
