Durbin and Pratt Get First QCS Wins of Season
by Ed Potter

EAST MOLINE, IL (June 6) - Seventy-six cars were on hand for the competition Sunday at the Quad City Speedway, with a track that was in perfect condition for racing.  A nice smooth race track apparently isn’t for everyone though.  As the Extreme Auto Glass Street Stock took to the track for their feature race second heat winner, Matt Werner grabbed the lead on the first lap and then the first caution flew.  The third caution at lap three saw three cars piled-up in turn four.  At lap five the caution came out again and two cars were sent to the pits for rough driving.  Before the race resumed on lap six the caution flew two more times.  Werner maintained his lead through all this and by this time only eight of the original seventeen starters were left on the track, but the cautions were done flying.  Werner went on to lead the last ten laps for his second win this year.  Chris Lawrence was second followed by Ron Marks Jr, Dwaine Hasson and Rob Nylin, in that order.  These were the last cars on the lead lap.  The other heat went to Scott Griffin.

The SNI of Geneseo A Modified feature also had problems getting started as that nasty yellow flag flew seven times in the first six laps.  These cautions included a five car pile-up on lap four and another five car pile-up on lap five.  On the drop of the green Leland Bushong moved out front, but had fourth place starter, Brandon Durbin running beside him going down the back chute.  On lap three Durbin edged out front and despite the next four cautions held on to lead the rest of the way to take his first Quad City Speedway victory this year.  Milo Veloz Jr was second with Andy Warner coming from his thirteenth starting spot to take third.  After being involved in the two five car pile-ups second heat winner, John Bull came back to take fourth with Bushong holding on for fifth.  Jason Pershey took the other heat.

The Sexton Ford IMCA Late Model feature went a lot smoother as only one caution flew in the entire thirty laps.  Eric Sanders used his front row starting spot to take the early lead and held it until the caution flew at lap eight.  By this time first heat winner, Ray Guss Jr. had moved from his seventh place starting spot up to third.  On the restart Guss moved out front and never looked back.  Guss strted lapping cars by lap fourteen and at lap fourteen second heat winner, Mike Murphy Jr. moved into second.  Guss took his third win of the season with Murphy taking second.  Eric Gustaf was third with Rob Toland taking fourth from his fourteenth place starting spot.  Nate Beuseling rounded out the top five.

Mark Vervynck came from his third place starting spot to take the early lead of the Verplaetse Excavating IMCA Modified feature.  Soon he had first heat winner, Andrew Burk and second heat winner, Ray Cox Jr. in a fight behind him trying to catch him.  Cox finally moved into second and even got up beside Vervynck a couple of times.  At lap eleven the fourth and final caution flew, but it was for the two leaders.  On the restart Jerry Pratt moved out front and went on for his first Quad City Speedway win this year.  Burk held on for second with Craig Crawford third.  Vervynck came back to take fourth over Rob Nylin’s fifth.  It had appeared that Jake Waterman had won the second heat but he was disqualified for a safety rules infraction.

Newcomer, Bryce Garnhart used his pole starting spot to take the lead of the Aaron’s Affordable Towing 4 Cylinder feature on the drop of the green.  The caution flew on the first lap as John Scott hit the front chute wall hard.  John was OK and walked back to the pit area.  On the restart Garnhart continued to lead until lap six when the caution flew again.  On this restart heat winner, Chad Tucker took over the point with a three car battle going on behind him between Garnhart, Luke Thurness and Steve Phillips. As these three guys were getting three wide at times the final caution flew at lap ten as Garnhart coasted to a stop in turn two.  Tucker went on for his second win in two weeks.  Thurness was second with Phillips third.  Joey Claeys was fourth followed by Mike Wisdom’s fifth.  Don’t forget next week will be the fifth annual running of the Ron Weedon Memorial race.
