Veloz Captures Ron Weedon Memorial Cash
by Ed Potter

EAST MOLINE, IL (July 4, 2010) - Weather Predictors can be wrong and Quad City Speedway proved it Sunday with the running of the J & J Camper/Robert’s Software/SNI of Geneseo Ron Weedon Memorial race.  Ron must have been smiling down as a few scattered sprinkles was all that fell and these never slowed down the racing action.  What a beautiful racing surface it was as cars could run high, low and in the middle all night long.  After some smooth and hard fought qualifying races the first feature to hit the track was the Extreme Auto Glass Street Stock.  Second heat winner, Joe Beal started on the pole and took the lead on the drop of the green.  After some single car cautions early, the race settled down after lap six with Beal still out front.  Matt Werner had worked his way back up to fourth after being in one of the early cautions.  At lap thirteen (with only two laps to go) Beal spun in turn four.. On the restart Rick Schriner took the lead with Werner right with him.  Schriner took his first win of the season with Werner second.  First heat winner, Chris Lawrence was third.  Dwaine Hasson came from his twelfth place starting spot to take fourth with Cory Brown in fifth in a borrowed car.

Outside front row starter, Perry Gellestedt snatche the lead of the Verplaetse Excavating IMCA Modified feature on the drop of the green with Hunter Wilson and first heat winner, Jake Waterman in hot pursuit.  On lap four Wilson got by Gellerstedt bringing Waterman with him.  Waterman moved out front on lap seven, but unfortunately one lap later retired with mechanical woes as Wilson spun in turn four.  On the restart second heat winner and seventh place starter, Craig Crawford took over the point and never looked back as he went on for his first victory of the year.  Greg Durbin was second with ninth place starter, Terry Rentfro taking third.  Joe Jones Jr was fourthwith Gellerstedt holding on for fifth.

It was now time for the Ron Weedon Memorial thirty lapper for SNI of Geneseo A Modifieds, and what a race it was.  It was great watching two of Ron Weedon’s old race cars lead the field around the track for the pace lap.  Jason Pershey drew lucky number one to start on the pole and grabbed the early lead with John Bull right on his tail.  On lap four second heat winner, Thad Wilson got by both Bull and Pershey to take over the lead.  Unfortunately for Pershey while still running in third he got to high and brushed the wall on lap eleven becoming the first car to retire from the event.  On the restart Wilson went back to the front with Bull and third heat winner and twelfth place starter, Milo Veloz Jr in a battle for second.  By lap twenty-one Veloz had moved into second and the chase was on, with Veloz getting side by side with Wilson many times.  A corner tire got moved out into the groove bringing out the final caution with only two laps to go.  On the restart Wilson went back to leading, but Veloz wasn’t quitting.  On a true last lap charge Veloz edged Wilson out for the checkers and the one thousand dollar first place prize.  It appeared Wilson was second, but he was disqualified for his actions on the speedway after the checkers fell.  Andy Warner took second with Bull holding on for third.  Thirteenth place starter, Donovan Lodge was fourthwith twelfth place starter, Dan Chapman fifth.  All fourteen cars (discounting Wilson) that were still on the track at ehe end were still on the lead lap.  Doug Crampton took the other heat win.

Second heat winner, Jason Bahrs started on the pole of the Sexton Ford IMCA Late Model feature and grabbed the early lead.  On lap three Matt Ryan moved out front and by lap five Rob Toland had worked into third.  By lap ten ninth place starter, Ray Guss Jr had moved into fourth and it soon became a three car side by side battle between Toland, Guss and Bahrs for the second spot.  At lap fourteen Bahrs got a little to high and into the wall going into turn three.  On the restart Ryan held on to the lead with Guss challenging for the spot.  On a restart at lap twenty-three Guss went out front and stayed there despite a caution with two laps to go.  Guss went on for his fifth win of the year and the thousand dollar first place money.  In a last lap move tenth place strter, Doug Nigh took second over Ryan’s third.  Mike Murphy Jr was fourth with Mike Garland fifth.  Nate Ceuseling took the other heat win.

Before a lap was scored in the Aaron’s Affordable Towing 4 Cylinder feture the caution flew as Dale Tucker ran over a corner tire in turn four and rolled his car.  Dale was not injered but the car was retired to the pits.  When the green did drop Virgil Paul Jr charged to the front and looked to have things in control.  At lap seven Mike Wisdom got up and into the wall coming off turn four bringing out the races only other caution.  On the restart Paul went back out front but soon had Todd Sibley nipping at his back bumper.  On the white flag lap Sibley moved out front bringing Gabe Schrader with him.  Sibley went on for his first win of the season with Schrader second.  Paul held on for third followed by last place starter, Justin Veloz in fourth and Mark Sutton fifth.  The heat wins went to Jon Scott and Bryce Garnhart.
