Lawrence Gets First Quad City Speedway Win of Season
by Ed Potter

EAST MOLINE, IL (July 18) - After a day of hot sunshine and warm breezes the track at Quad City Speedway was actually in pretty good racing condition Sunday.  It was good enough to allow two and three wide racing in all the heat races.  By the time the Extreme Auto Glass Street Stock feature hit the track the anxiety level was apparently very high as on the drop of the green five cars piled up in turn four.  The only casualty was first heat winner, Ron Marks Jr with broken steering.  Anxiety was still running high as on the second try to get the race started eight cars piled in turn one.  This time it wasn’t serious as all cars survived and were able to continue.  When the race did get going it was Rick Schriner out front.  By lap two it became a battle of the eights with Schriner out front in his car number 8 and second heat winner, Chris Lawrence challenging in his car number 8L.  On lap three Lawrence moved out front with Schriner right there.  Schriner was able to get back up beside Lawrence a few time, but couldn’t get back by.  The races only other caution flew at lap twelve as a car slowed up against the wall in turn four.  This tightened the field back up for the final three laps,, But nobody was going to take it away from Lawrence as he went on for his first Quad City Speedway win of the season.  Schriner held on for second with Korey Peterson third.  Twelfth place starter, Cary Brown was fourth with eleventh starter, Rob Nylin fifth.

On the start of the Verplaetse Excavating IMCA Modified feature pole sitter, Todd Dykema went out front but couldn’t hold it as he spun in turn four coming to lead the first lap.  On the restart Mark Vervynck went out front and was soon holding off Jerry Durbin.  The caution flew again at lap seven as Dykema continued to have problems.  On the restart it was Vervynck back out front with Jake Waterman right beside him.  A lap later Durbin was back in the battle.  The last two laps Durbin was giving Vervynck all he could handle.  Vervynck took his third win of the year with Durbin a close second.  Waterman was third with Hunter Wilson fourth and Rob Nylin fifth.  The heat wins went to Andrew Burk and Craig Crawford.

Second heat winner, Doug Crampton jumped into the lead of the SNI of Geneseo Pro Modified feature and never looked back.  If he had looked back we would have sen a real battle going on for second between Jason Pershy and John Bull.  By lap fifteen a battle developed for fourth with Ryan Dolan and Ray Bollinger running side by side.  The races one real caution fell with three laps to go for a car spun in turn four.  With the field tightened back up Crampton went on for his second win of the year.  Pershy was second followed by Bull, Dolan and Bollinger, in that order.  Milo Veloz Jr won the other heat.

Pole sitter and second heat winner, Buck Harmening went to the front of the Sexton Ford IMCA Late Model feature and immediately it was two and three wide racing all the way back through the field behind him.  The caution came out at lap three for a single car spun in turn four.  On the restart Harmening went back out front with first heat winner, Rob Toland right there putting the pressure on.  At lap sic Toland moved out front bringing Mike Garland with him.  On the eighth circuit Garland took over the point and there was still two and three wide racing back through the field.  Lap nine saw the caution fly once more, this time for debris.  On the restart it was Garland, Toland, ninth place starter Ray Guss Jr and Todd Malmstrom.  Three laps later Guss moved into second and was putting the pressure on Garland.  At lap sixteen Guss got by Garland, but Garland wasn’t giving up.  The caution flew again at lap nineteen for two cars in turn four, but this time Toland was forced to leave the fight with mechanical woes.  A car stopped up against the wall in turn four bringing out the last caution at lap twenty-four.  On the restart it was Guss back out front with a side by side battle for third between Eric Gustaf and Malmstrom.  Guss went on to make his seventh trip to victory lane this year with Garland a strong second.  Malmstrom took third with Gustaf fourth.  Fifth went to twelfth place starter, Matt Ryan.

Aaron’s Affordable Towing 4 Cylinder actions saw Chad Tomlinson take the early lead with a battle right on his tail between J. R. Brown and Jon Scott.  Brown went out front on lap three with ninth place starter and second heat winner, Chad Tucker right behind him.  The caution flew at lap four for a single car in turn two.  On the restart it was still Brown, but one lap later Tucker took over the point.  The caution came out after the white flag had been taken and Tucker got his fifth win of the season.  Brown held on for second with Scott third, Mike Wisdom fourth and Bryan Ritter fifth.

Thursday willl be the running of the Sexton Ford Rock Island County Fair races at the Quad City Speedway for IMCA Late Models and Street Stock cars.  The Late Models will be running a forty lap feature for two thousand dollars to win and weekly and regional points, while the street stock twenty lap feature will pay four hundred to the winner.  Both classes will run on a draw and redraw format.  Pits open at four with hot laps at six thirty.  There will be no entry fee charged.  There will be plenty of parking behind the track with a shuttle to bring fans to the front side.
