Rain and Lightning Halt Quad City Speedway Action
by Ed Potter

EAST MOLINE, IL (September 5) - All the qualifying races and three of the features were ran before the weather stopped things Sunday on Aaron’s Affordable Towing night at the Quad City Speedway.  One of the most touching moments in Quad City Speedway history came during intermission as Hershel Roberts came out and hot lapped his race car to the applause and cheers of the fans in the stands.

Pole sitter, Ron Marks Jr took the lead of the Extreme Auto Glass Street Stock feature and by lap seven he had Rick Schriner and Chris Lawrence chomping at his heels.  Lawrence had edged out front with two laps to go when the caution flew as Schriner and Marks got together on the front stretch.  Lawrence went on for the win, but it wasn’t a give me as B. J. Sparks ran just on the inside of him the entire last lap.  After being involved in an earlier caution, Matt Werner came back to take third with Emily Gade fourth.  Sixteenth place starter, Rob Nylin rounded out the top five.

The Verplaetse Excavating IMCA Modified feature got off to a wild start as on the drop of the green Kevin Goben was out front, but by the time the cars got back to the flag stand it was Mark Vervynck leading.  On the next lap it was Joe Jones Jr out front.  Then the caution started flying.  On the fifth lap Jerry Durbin took over the point and one lap later the caution and checkers flew together ending the race, due to the number of cautions and the time it was taking.  Durbin got the win with Jones second and Vervynck third.  Andrew Burk was fourth with Perry Gellerstedt fifth.

Milo Veloz Jr grabbed the early lead of the SNI of Geneseo A Modified feature with John Bull right on his tail.  On a fifth lap restart it was Bull out front with Veloz right on his tail.  By the mid-race point the cars were running three wide for positions three, four and five.  Bull took the win with Veloz second.  Donovan Lodge was third with Rob Toland fourth and twelfth place starter, Mitch Morris fifth.

Unfortunately only two laps of the Sexton Ford IMCA Late Model feature got on the books when the weather moved in.  There will be no racing at the speedway this coming Sunday, But on September 19th the first things on the program will be the finish of this feature and the Aaron’s Affordable Towing 4 Cylinder feature.  The 19th will also be the running of the Gary Reinhart Memorial with extra money in the pot for the A Modified cars.
