Crampton Wins Ron Weedon Memorial Race
by Ed Potter

EAST MOLINE, IL (June 12, 2011) - Sunday the Quad City Speedway had the honor of hosting the Ron Weedon Memorial Race.  This was to be a twenty-five lap race for the Affordable Parking Lot A Modified division paying one thousand dollars to the winner.  During the course of the evening two drivers in other divisions were disqualified for using their cars as weapons during cautions.  That is all the mentioning of these two as by being disqualified they were not even there so they don’t merit anything more.  After qualifying races were battled the first feature to hit the speedway was the Verplaetse Excavating IMCA Modified feature.  The pole sitter took the early lead and on lap seven T. J. Patz climbed the was on the front straight and rolled his car.  T. J. clinbed out of the car OK to the cheers of the crowd.  On lap eight, tenth place starter, Thad Wilson went out front but it wasn’t over yet.  The last three laps of the race became a battle between the top three running for the win.  Wilson held on to take his third win of the year with Milo Veloz Jr second and Mitch Morris third.  Greg Durbin was fourth over Craig Crawford’s fifth.

Next up was the Extreme Auto Glass Street Stock and R. J. Gonzales came from third to grab the lead on the first lap.  Around the  mid race point Rick Schriner came up to put some pressure on, but Gonzales was not to be denied as he led all the way for his first trip to victory circle this season.  Schriner was a starong second with Chuck Fox third.  Chris Lawrence came from ninth to take fourth with Emily Gade fifth.

It was now time for the Ron Weedon Memorial Race which had a draw and redraw format.  Doug Crampton drew lucky chip number one for his starting spot in the feature and used it to his advantage as he sailed out into the lead.  Soon John Bull was chasing him but it looked like no one had anything for Crampton.  At lap fourteen Bull broke a drive shaft bringing out the caution and tightening the field back up.  On the restart it was Crampton back out front.  With five laps to go Ray Bollinger had worked his way up and started putting a challenge on Crampton for the front spot.  Crampton was not giving up as he took his first victory of the season.  Bollinger was second with Ryan Dolan third, Shaune Lewis fourth and Brandon Durbin fifth.  Crampton stated in a post race interview he had no brakes at the end.

During intermission the owner of Rock River Arms had came to the judges stand and added five hundred dollars for the winner of the Sexton Ford IMCA Late Model feature.  The drop of the green saw Mike Zemo Jr charge out front and take total control until a lap eight restart.  On the restart Mike Murphy jr started pressuring Zemo.  Zemo ran high and Murphy low until lap twenty when Murphy made a crow over move and went out front.  Murphy went on to take his first Quad City Speedway win of the year.  Twelfth place starter, Ray Guss Jr was second with Nate Beuseling third.  Coming from sixteenth Gary Webb took fourth with Zemo holding on for fifth.

After few weeks of rotten luck pole sitter, Aaron Hitt took the lead of the Aaron’s Affordable Towing 4 Cylinder single caution feture on the start.  Hitt led flag to flag for his first win this year.  Justin Veloz was second with tenth place starter, Mike Morrow third.  Wade Dahl was fourth with Jake Ellithorpe rounding out the top five.
