Eckrich Wins Race of Champions at QCS
by Ed Potter

EAST MOLINE, IL (September 24, 2011) - Saturday and Sunday the Quad City Speedway was to host the Dirt Track Classic for IMCA Deery Brothers Summer Series Late Models.  Saturday the late Models ran Qualifying and a Race of Champions, then on Sunday was to be last chance races and the Dirt Track Classic 50.  A Modifieds ran qualifiers and a main event Saturday as did the Street Stock, Mod-Lites and 4 Cylinders.  One hundred and eighteen cars crowded into the pit area to compete in these races.  Unfortunately the weatherman stepped in the Sunday program had to be canceled.  As of now no reschedule date has been set.  Thirty Late Models were checked into the pit area to battle for the top spot.  The twenty lap Race of Champions for the Late Models had Andy Eckrich starting on the pole and he knew what to do with it as he led flag to flag to take the win.  Terry Neal was a close second.  Ninth place starter Justin reed took third with Ray Guss Jr coming from twelfth to take fourth.  Tyler Bruening was fifth.

Twenty-six  Street Stocks were on hand to vie for the twenty car feature starting field.  Jerry Miles drew lucky number one and started on the pole of the twenty lap, two caution feature.  Miles took the lead on the drop of the green and led all the way to the checkers.  It wasn’t a give me though as eighth place starter, Ron Henry pressured him all the way and took a strong second.  Twelfth place starter, RJ Gonzales was third with Emily Gade fourth.  Joe Bonney came home fifth.

Shaune Lewis grabbed the early lead of the A Modified feature and held it until the first of two cautions flew at the mid-race point.  On the restart Ryan Dolan moved out front and went on to the victory.  John Bull came from eleventh to take second with Lewis holding on for third.  Brandon Durbin was fourth with Billy Tuckwell ffith.

The actual first event of the evening to hit the track was a make-up feature for the Mod-Lites.  Troy Philpott led flag to flag to take the win with Anthony Guss second, Rob Guss third, Shon Sanders fourth, and Evan Epperson fifth.  The regular feature didn’t go quite as smooth as the caution flew five times in the first three laps and the drivers were told one more caution and the race was over.  Too bad they couldn’t get another lap in and the caution flew once more ending the race.  Rob Guss led the first lap with Anthony Guss taking over on lap two.  Anthonty was awarded the win with Rob second.  Sanders was third with Jake Halcomb fourth and Jeff Miller fifth.           Gene Potter led the first lap tof the 4 Cylinder feature with Joe Zrostlik taking over on a third lap restart.  Zrostlik went on to take the win with Potter holding on for second as the race ended under a caution after the white flag was displayed.  Aaron Hitt was third with Triton Clark fourth and Rob Nylin fifth.
