Ray Guss Jr. Returns to Davenport, Victory Lane
by Mike McGuire

DAVENPORT, IA (June 29) - On Ray Guss Jr.'s last visit to the Davenport Speedway (May 18th), he started in the sixth row, took the lead late in the race, and won the IMCA Late Model feature.

Ray returned to Davenport Friday, for a big helping of déjà vu. Adam Oppendike held the early lead of the Late Model feature after starting on the pole. Doug Nigh would take the top spot on lap 9, and held it until lap 22. After starting in the 6th row, Guss used the very top of the racetrack to reel in Nigh and then dove under the leader in turn one to take the lead.

Guss would lead the remaining laps to win handily, with Nigh taking second. Mike Murphy Jr. finished third, followed by Matt Ryan and Rick Wages, rounding out the top five. Late Model heats went to Guss, Rob Toland, and Stephan Kammerer.

The V-8 Modified feature was captured by Kevin Blum. Blum snatched the lead from Marty Diercks after a mid-race caution. The victory was Kevin's third win at Davenport this year. Thad Wilson took second with Troy Emerick third. Diercks would hold on for fourth with John Bull fifth. Modified heats went to the brothers Kevin and Keith Blum, and Jason Pershy.

Toby Spicer blistered the field in the Street Stock feature. Spicer took the lead from his front row starting spot and never looked back. Josh Wilson ran into the second spot, with Joe Beal third, Brad Tyler fourth, and Ron Doolittle fifth. Andrew Burk and Don Hatfield won the Street Stock heats.

John Ahlers took his third feature win of the season in the B-Mod main. Chris Stein took the early lead off the pole and was looking for his first win, when Ahlers got by with just a couple laps to go. Stein would finish second, followed by Jake Waterman third, Todd Stickler fourth, and Craig Crawford completed the top five. Stickler, Stein, and Bryan Rogers were heat winners.

Eric Barth also collected his third feature win of the season, in the INEX Legend car class. Barth was leading by the end of lap two and held a sizeable lead at the checkers. Dennis Begyn took second. The battle for third went to Craig Peekenschieder, over Warren Ropp and Darrick Calhoun. Barth and Begyn won the heats.

Steven Phillips picked up his second 4-Cylinder win at Davenport this season. Phillips took the lead on lap one and led to the end. Bryan Klein took a close second with Kevin Haury third, Steve Boyle fourth, and Ricky Kay fifth. Boyle and Haury won the heats.
