Guss Does It Again at Davenport
by Mike McGuire
DAVENPORT, IA (Aug 10, 2007) - After a two week break for the Mississippi
Valley Fair, stock car racing returned to the Davenport Speedway, Friday night.
Four drivers started the evening with the opportunity to be the first driver at
the Davenport Speedway to win three straight features this season. Hershel
Roberts (late model), Thad Wilson (A-mod), Dan Klatt (B-mod), and Steven
Phillips (4 Cylinder), each had the chance to 3-peat.
In the IMCA Late Model feature, Ray Guss Jr. picked up a third win of his own.
Guss has been competing part-time at the Davenport Speedway this season. In his
five regular season appearances, he has finished no lower than third and won the
last three visits.
The feature started with Nate Buesling taking the early lead from his pole
starting position. On lap seven, Rob Toland took the lead. A caution on lap 14,
would put the field and Guss on Toland's rear bumper. Guss would take the lead
on lap 16, and race side by side with Toland for several laps, before taking the
lead for good.
Guss would lead the remaining laps to win handily, with Toland second. Terry
Neal finished third, followed by Matt Ryan and Adam Oppendike, who started last
in the field. Heat races went to Guss, Rob Toland, and Mark Preston.
The V-8 Modified feature was captured by Kevin Blum, his fourth feature win of
the year. Blum snatched the lead from Troy Emerick on lap four and never looked
back. Kevin would take the checkers with a full straightaway lead over second
place finisher Thad Wilson. Troy Emerick held on for third. Rick Ratliff and
Matt Stein rounded out the top five. Modified heats went to Wilson and Emerick.
Toby Spicer blistered the field in the Street Stock feature, for his second win
of the season. Spicer started in the pole position and led the entire distance.
Point leader Brad Tyler finished in the second spot, with Tony VonDresky third,
Kevin Schloemer fourth, and Tim Koehler fifth. Spicer and Tyler won the Street
Stock heats.
Mike Fluegel took his first feature win of the season in the B-Mod main. Chris
Stein took the early lead and held it through the first four cautions and seven
laps. On the fourth restart, Fluegel got by and would go on for the win. Craig
Crawford had a good run to take second, followed by Kevin Fitzgibbon third,
Stein fourth, and John Ahlers in fifth. Stein, and Dan Klatt were heat winners.
Eric Barth also collected his fifth feature win of the season, in the INEX
Legend car class. Barth took the lead from fellow Wisconsin driver Mike Mueller
on lap 4. Barth would be followed to the checkers by Jeremy Meyer and Keith
Meyer. Craig Peekenschieder finshed fourth, with Mueller fifth. Barth and
Peekenschieder won the heats.
Ricky Kay picked up his fourth 4-Cylinder win at Davenport this season. Matt
Montoya, in his first visit to Davenport, was on his way to victory when he had
trouble with his right front wheel on the final lap. Kay took the lead coming
out of the final turn and took the win. Montoya crept across the line for second
with Dan Keltner third, Steve Boyle fourth, and Devon Timmermann fifth. Kay and
Phillips won the heats.
