Guss scores again at Davenport
by Mike McGuire

DAVENPORT, Ia. (May 16, 2008) - Ray Guss Jr., took up right where he left off. Last week’s IMCA Late Model feature winner repeated in style, with a winning margin of a half lap. Guss started the twenty-five lap main in the sixth row and passed early race leader Jeremy Gustaf on lap eight.

While Guss distanced himself from the field, there was an intense battle going on for second. Gustaf and Mike Garland ran side-by-side or nose-to-tail, throughout most of the race. In the last few laps, Garland managed to find enough grip to clear Gustaf and take second. Mike Murphy Jr,. and Boone McLaughlin conducted their own battle for the fourth position. Murphy would take the spot with McLaughlin right behind. Murphy, Leroy Brenner, and Joe Zrostlik won the late model heats, with Stephan Kammerer taking the semi-feature.

The Pro Mod feature saw a rash of yellow flags. When the race’s seventh caution flag flew, so did the checkers. Kevin Blum outlasted the yellows and just nipped Donovan Lodge to take his first victory of the season at Davenport. Lodge had led the first three quarters of the race before Blum was able to take the point. Lodge finished a disappointing second with Bob Dominacki, John Bull, and Jim Sandusky rounding out the top five.

‘Racin Jason’ Bahrs of Colona, blistered the field in the street stock division. Bahrs drove from mid-pack to the lead by lap four. Once in the lead, Bahrs was not to be denied the win. Kevin Schloemer was second, followed by Tim Koehler, Joe Beal, and Rob Nylin, in that order.

The B-Mod feature got off to an ominous start as a multi-car pile-up left the car of Dustin Schram pointing towards the sky. No one was injured in the accident.
When racing resumed, Tod Stickler quickly went to the front and led the remaining laps for his second straight win. Kelly Meyer had to settle for second again. Derrick Carlson, Perry Mitchell, and Chad Tomlinson completed the top five.

Dennis Begyn won a fast-paced INEX legend car feature. Begyn came from his fourth row starting spot to take the lead on lap three. Jeremy Meyer, Lane Swearinger, and Craig Peekenschnieder each took a shot at the top spot, but would finish second through fourth respectively. Early race leader Darrick Calhoun finished fifth.

Wade Dahl of Blue Grass made it three feature wins in a row, in the 4 Stock class. Dahl held off Ricky Kay for the win.

Next Friday, May 23rd, the Davenport Speedway will host a late model special. The World Dirt Racing League stars will compete on the big half-mile track, while the IMCA late models will race on the quarter-mile oval for track and national points.
