Moffitt Experiences the Ups and Downs of Big Time Racing

ANKENY, IA (May 18) – Brett Moffitt has had a lot of new racing experiences in the past few months but, this past weekend was the most exciting and disappointing for the young up and comer. Moffitt started the race week with an appearance last Thursday at the “All Things Racing” promotional event at Karl Chevrolet. The event held from 3:00 pm to 8:00 pm on May 15th allowed area fans to meet with Moffitt and his 5K Motorsports Race Team. There were several motorsports displays and representatives present from the Iowa Speedway, ASA Late Model Series, GM Performance Parts, GM Accessories, and Moffitt’s new sponsor, Karl Chevrolet.

On Friday, Moffitt’s day started early at the Iowa Speedway. A 7:30 am registration was followed by a 9:00 am drivers meeting and then it was several hours of intense practice sessions. These sessions enabled the 5K Motorsports Race Team and their young driver to hone their on track communication skills as well as preparing the Karl Chevrolet sponsored GM performance Parts Crate Engine powered Monte Carlo for Saturdays qualifying and race event.

Saturday would bring final practice sessions and then qualifying. With ongoing adjustments, the 5K Motorsports Team was confident that Moffitt’s first qualifying effort ever in the ASA Late Model Challenge Series would be a good one. Brett had adapted well to the car, the team and above all, the fastest race track he had ever raced on to date. Brett commented just before qualifying that he was comfortable in the car and comfortable on the track. With 31 ASA Late Model Challenge Series cars qualifying, Moffitt put the Karl Chevrolet 5K Motorsports entry in the field, qualifying comfortably in the seventeenth position.

Moffitt was then greeted by hundreds of his home town fans during a one hour long autograph session that served as the prelude to the start of the “Pride of Iowa” 150. Using the first fifty lap segment to settle in and get comfortable racing at an average speed over 135 miles per hour, Moffitt and crew completed the first fifty laps in the fourteenth position. During the break, driver and crew discussed and made needed adjustments hoping to make a charge during the next fifty laps. From the restart, it was apparent that the adjustments made were the right ones. Moffitt quickly moved forward putting himself inside the top ten. With great coaching from his spotter and crew chief, by lap seventy-one Brett was challenging for the seventh position. Until this point Moffitt’s Challenge Series experiences were all ups but, here comes the downer. In turn four of lap seventy-two, Moffitt’s car challenging for the seventh position, and the seventh place car made contact sending both cars backwards into the outside retaining wall. Unable to restart his car due to a stuck throttle linkage, Moffitt’s first race night at his home town track had come to an end.

While disappointed about being unable to finish the race, Brett Moffitt had nothing to hang his head about. Moffitt’s ability to make good decisions, communicate with his team and pass cars when it was time was very impressive. Comments from the 5K Motorsports Team, Brett Moffitt Racing personal, and representatives from sponsor Karl Chevrolet were all very positive, supportive and encouraging. Brett Moffitt is on a pace that most fifteen year olds could not even comprehend. There will be a learning curve; it will include ups and downs, especially in the world of motorsports. For Moffitt who possesses a cool racing demeanor, a very personable personality and a strong will for competition, he has just taken another giant step toward what will surly be a very successful career in auto racing.

Karl Chevrolet is proud to sponsor Brett Moffitt’s efforts, competing in the IMCA Karl Chevrolet Northern SportMod division and the ASA Late Model North and Challenge Series divisions.
