Moffitt Climbs to Third in ASALMS North Points – Leads the Rookie Points

ANKENY, IA (June 3) - Brett Moffitt continues to make gains, honing his asphalt racing skills, while competing as a rookie in the ASALMS North Series. Qualifying the Karl Chevrolet sponsored / 5K Motorsports prepared Chevrolet Monte Carlo, with an eleventh place quick time, Moffitt successfully put himself solidly in the field at the Toledo, OH Speedway during the “Glass Breaker 125”. Moffitt has put himself safely in the field during each of the four ASALMS events he has participated in so far this season. Continuing on with what many are saying will be a short learning curve, Moffitt has finished eleventh at Indianapolis’ O’Reilly Raceway Park, experienced a disappointing DNF at the Iowa Speedway, finished a career high fourth at the Grundy County Speedway and last weekend Moffitt and the 5K Motorsports Team worked together to bring home a sixth place finish at the Toledo Speedway.

At the drop of the green, Moffitt was comfortable and set for the 125 lap run. However, the first of eight cautions would come out on Lap 12 when the 15 year-old Moffitt and fellow competitor Bob Varney would get together, resulting in ASALMS officials asking Moffitt to restart the race from the rear of the field. Taking advantage for the next seven cautions, the 5K Team would use communications, under green flag laps, with their rookie driver to analyzing the cars performance as well as coaching Brett’s drive back to the front. With important input from their young driver, minor adjustments would be made quickly, maintaining their lead lap status, under the cautions. Restarting in the thirtieth position with only about fifty laps to go, Moffitt hunkered down and began an impressive charge to the front. When the checked flag flew, Brett Moffitt overcame his early race incident with Varney, moved past twenty-four cars, in less than fifty laps, to finish the race in sixth. Moffitt would also finish in front of all other rookie contenders, earning him the Glass Breaker 125 “Rookie of the Race” honors.

The hard work and efforts put forth by driver and crew have not come unrewarded. At the completion of last weekends race, Brett Moffitt, along with the 5K Motorsports Team, finds himself in third place of the ASALMS North Series point standings, just behind Jesse Saunder, who is in second and current points leader and ASALMS veteran, Eddie Hoffman. Not bad for an asphalt rookie with only six complete asphalt events under his belt. Next event on Moffitt’s ASALMS schedule will be on Saturday June 7th, for the “River Run 100” at the La Crosse Fairgrounds Speedway, West Salem, WI.
