A NIGHT OF NEW WINNERS AT DAVENPORT SPEEDWAY
by Mike McGuire

DAVENPORT, Ia. (July 11, 2008) - For the first time since mid-May, the Davenport Speedway was able to get in back to back racing events. The evening saw five first time winners in 2008, with the lone repeat winner Jeremy Marquette in the Street Stocks.

Terry Neal returned to victory lane Friday at Davenport in the IMCA Late Model feature. Neal started in the sixth row, but by lap 12, Neal was in a 4-way battle for the lead with Ray Guss Jr., Boone McLaughlin, and Andy Nezworski.

Suddenly, Guss retired with mechanical problems and McLaughlin broke something in the front end causing him to fall back. Neal drove away from Nezworski and picked up his first Davenport win of the year. Nezworski finished second, with Mike Murphy Jr. third. Keith Pratt and Matt Ryan completed the top five. Murphy, Joe Zrostlik, and Stephan Kammerer were heat winners
In Pro Mod action, Bob Dominacki collected his first ‘08 Davenport trophy. Dominacki started seventh, but was in the lead by lap four. Thad Wilson got by Dominacki on lap eight, but the caution flag flew before the lap could be completed, giving the lead back to Bob.

Dominacki did not waste the opportunity, leading the remaining 13 laps, en route to the win. Wilson would have to settle for second, followed by John Bull, Matt Stein, and Kevin Blum. Dominacki and Wilson each took a heat race win.

Pat Fennelly returned to track championship form, winning the Kimberly Dodge B-Mod main. Derrick Carlson held the early lead through a series of cautions, before Fennelly took over the top spot. Late in the race, Kelly Meyer tried to mount a challenge for the lead, but on the last lap, his car slowed and he fell back to seventh place finish. Dan Anderson moved up to finish second. Craig Crawford, Joe Jones Jr., and Carlson finished third through fifth, in that order.

Jeremy Marquette picked off his third feature win of the season in the B&C Auto Street Stock main. Marquette cruised to the win after starting in the front row. Cary Brown battled to a second place finish, with Randy Exline third. Donnie Louck finished fourth and Rick Schriner fifth.

Former INEX Legend Car national champion, Eric Barth took the feature win in his class. The Wisconsin driver making his first start at Davenport, this season, came from a fifth row start, to take the lead on lap five. Barth would hold off Warren Ropp to get the win. Dennis Begyn, Bret Diercks, and Wisconsin driver Mike Miller rounded out the top five.

Dubuque invaders ruled the CrashedToys.com 4 Stocks division. Chuck Schmitz and Steve Schueller, both making their first start at Davenport this season blistered the field. Schmitz took the lead on lap five and led the remaining laps for the win. Schueller started dead last and finished second. Chris Zrostlik led the local contingent, finishing third. Josh Riley was fourth and Wade Dahl fifth.

Midwest Jalopies were on hand for the event with Terry Mattly winning both the heat and feature. Chris Gillmore finished second, followed by Dan Haack.
