Swift St. Arnold runs away with Super Nationals Sprint prize

BOONE, Iowa (Sept. 2) – Tim St. Arnold didn’t look like a driver who’d been away from the sport for two years when he took to the track Tuesday night at Boone Speedway.

St. Arnold left the rest of the field well behind in winning the IMCA Speedway Motors Super Nationals Sprint Car feature, leading all 20 laps and pocketing $1,000 for his efforts.

“I’ve been retired. This is my first race in two years,” said St. Arnold, who got his son Jordan started in the 360 sprint class at Knoxville. “This track resembles West Burlington and Sioux Falls. I like bullrings and that’s pretty much what this is.”

Three-time and defending champion Curt Lund ran a distant second in what was also the final event in the Jackpot Junction Tour.

Rounding out the top five were Lyle Howey III, Jennifer Eriksen and Brad Lund.

While John Greenwood drew the pole start, it was St. Arnold who was quickly in front from outside row one. A red flag on lap seven wiped out his ¼-lap advantage over Curt Lund, but St. Arnold shot ahead on the following re-start.

Howey caught Eriksen for third on lap eight. The final caution of the contest came with four laps to go and the same scenario was replayed as St. Arnold pulled away and was not challenged enroute to his career first Super Nationals title.

He’d come to Boone before to watch buddy Matt Stephenson race in the winged class, but never raced on the 1/3 mile oval himself before Tuesday.

“I used to race at Des Moines and won a track title there, and was a rookie of the year at Knoxville,” St. Arnold said from victory lane. “This win tonight ranks up there with either of those accomplishments.”

Shannon Eriksen wrapped up the tour title with an eighth place finish.
