Mother Nature Won Last Weekend; Moffitt Returns to Racing this Weekend at I-70

GRIMES, Ia (Sept 16) - Mother Nature took the win last weekend, as rain washed out races throughout the Central States, including the 47th Annual “Tony Bettenhausen Classic 100” presented by Lisa Thomas Salons, scheduled at the Illiana Motor Speedway, Schererville, IN. Promoters have indicated the race will be rescheduled, and the Moffitt team intends to compete, baring a conflict with other scheduled events.

This weekend, Moffitt and the 5K Motorsports team will travel to familiar grounds when they return to I-70 Speedway in Odessa, MO, to compete in the ASA Late Model North Series “World Cup”. Moffitt’s first visit to the wicked-fast 30 degree high banks of I-70, also known as “America’s Fastest Weekly Race Track”, was on May 3rd this year, and it was a very successful trip. Moffitt set fast time for the night at 17.22 seconds, which also ended up being a new track record for the weekly ASA Late Models on the new American Racer tires. Due to weekly rules and the fact that it was Moffitt’s first appearance at the track, Moffitt had to start the forty lap feature from the rear of the field. On lap twenty, Moffitt took the lead and held off challenges from local racing hot shoes Ronnie Hartford, Mike Vannoy and Caleb Hall, coming home with the victory and his fist victory ever in asphalt competition.

On July 4th, Moffitt and crew traveled back to I-70 for the ASA Late Model North Series “Light up the Night 150”. Friday’s asphalt schedule called for practice only, but I-70 Officials had scheduled racing for Friday evening on the I-70 dirt track. With that in mind, Moffitt’s dirt crew towed his IMCA SportMod to Odessa, and Moffitt swept the night on the dirt track by winning the IMCA – Karl Chevrolet Northern SportMod feature and took the challenge of competing in a special open competition B-Mod feature, which he also won. On Saturday night, Moffitt attacked the asphalt competing in the 5K prepared, Karl Chevrolet / GM Performance Parts, DuPont Tyvek Impala SS. Moffitt and crew raced to a very respectable fifth place finish in the ASA Late Model North Series “Light Up the Night 150” event.

The Final Event of the season for the ASA Late Model North Series, Moffitt’s rookie year in his Karl Chevrolet / GM Performance Parts and DuPont Tyvek sponsored Chevrolet Impala SS, will be the ASA Late Model North Series Championship “Octoberfest 100”. The event will be held on the 0.545 Mile, progressively banked LaCrosse Fairgrounds Speedway, located in West Salem, WI. The date for the Wisconsin event is Saturday, October 4th.

Currently Moffitt is the leading rookie contender in the ASA Late Model North Series for “Rookie of the Year” honors and is sitting in third place in the overall North Series point standings, behind veteran drivers Jesse Saunders and Eddie Hoffman.
