Moffitt Returns to I-70, Brings Home a Top 5 Finish in “World Cup 100”
by: Chuck Stowe

GRIMES, IA (Sept 22) – This past weekend, Brett Moffitt and the 5K Motorsports team returned to “America’s Fastest Weekly Race Track”, I-70 Speedway located in Odessa, Missouri for the ASA Late Model North Series “World Cup 100”. In its 29 year history, most successful NASCAR drivers have passed through the back stretch gate and competed on this uniquely shaped, wicked fast, 28 degree, .543 mile high banked speed plant. Drivers like, Mark Martin, Rusty Wallace, Jamie McMurray, Tony Stewart, Clint Boyer, Matt Kenseth, Carl Edwards, Greg Biffle and Jimmie Johnson, to mention just a few, have honed their skills in ASALMS racing at I-70 Speedway, before moving on to become NASCAR stars.

Friday afternoon practice was cut short, due to seeping issues on the track in the entrance to turn three. An excess of rain earlier in the week had left the ground around the speedway saturated, causing the water seepage on the track. Before the seeping started, Moffitt and crew made several practice runs, each time improving on their lap times, from the first session time of 17.202 seconds to the last session time of 16.850 seconds.

On Saturday, with the water seeping issue resolved, teams would have one last practice session before qualifying. Happy with times in that session, the 5K team would make some final adjustments that included the sticker tires Moffitt would use to make his qualifying run and compete on during the “World Cup 100”. Moffitt’s Karl Chevrolet / GM Performance Parts, DuPont Tyvek sponsored Chevrolet Impala SS was first out for qualifying, and Moffitt’s qualifying run of 16.776 seconds was an improvement over practice times. When all 25 cars had completed their qualifying runs, Moffitt’s time would be tenth quick, putting him on the fifth row outside for the start of the 100 lap event.

From the start, Moffitt hit his marks and maintained his position, while keeping himself within striking distance of the cars in front of him. Cautions filled the first forty-two laps; however, the young rookie steered clear of the crashes and used the restarts to begin his move to the front. On the lap fourteen restart, Moffitt would move into ninth, and he would move up another spot during a lap nineteen restart. Using restarts on laps thirty and forty-two, Moffitt would move himself into the sixth position, running nose to tail with the fifth, fourth and third place cars. On lap fifty-seven, Moffitt made the move of a seasoned veteran, using a lap car to box in the #76 car of Troy Hintzsche, and make the pass for fifth place. From that point on, traffic was heavy, as lap cars would be an issue for the front runners. The top two cars were able to pull away slightly from the third, fourth and fifth place cars that for the last 43 laps ran mere inches apart, nose to tail. When the checker flag flew, Moffitt had finished fifth, adding another top five finish to his very impressive ASA Late Model North Series rookie season stats.

Going into the final event for the 2008 ASA Late Model North Series, Moffitt and crew have maintained their lead in the ASA Late Model North Series for “Rookie of the Year” honors and are firmly sitting in third place in the overall North Series point standings, behind veteran drivers Jesse Saunders and Eddie Hoffman.

The Final Event of the season for the ASA Late Model North Series will be the ASA Late Model North Series Championship “Octoberfest 100”. The event will be held on the 0.545 Mile, progressively banked LaCrosse Fairgrounds Speedway, located in West Salem, WI. The date for the Wisconsin event is Saturday, October 4th. Moffitt and crew are looking for a strong finish, cementing their position as “Rookie of the Year” and at the very least, a third place finish in the overall North Series point standings. Whatever the outcome, it has been a very good year for the young driver from Grimes, Iowa, who last year drove his first car race in the IMCA SportMod division and only two years ago was racing a go-kart.
