Anderson, Still Undefeated at Shelby County Speedway
By Shannon Lowe

HARLAN, IA (May 17) - Another gorgeous night for racing, last Saturday as the KNOD Relay for Life Team “Stayin’ Alive with 105” helped pack the house on KNOD night at the races and fans enjoyed a warm night of racing at the Shelby County Speedway.

The KNOD Kool Gold Compacts took the track with finesse as racers battled hard for the checkered from start to finish. As the green flag dropped, Bryan Smith elbowed his way from mid pack toward the front taking damage to his car on the way. Brandon Claussen drove hard and managed to hold off Smith but was unable to capture three in a row as last year’s Sport Compact Track Champion Tom Summerfield returned to the track for the first time this year, and proved to be tough competition again, taking the checkered flag with ease followed by Claussen, Smith and Caine Malberg.

Racing in the Country Tire, Harlan Firestone Hobby Stocks was a real thrill with cars stacked together and 3 wide racing lap after lap. Jason Fusselman dug in early to nab the top spot for few laps before Adam Hensel stripped him of it. Meanwhile, Shannon Anderson was on the prowl working his way through the horde of hobby stocks that started ahead of him. As he worked alongside Jason Fusselman, gunning for the 2nd spot, Adam Hensel dropped out of the race with a blown engine. Fusselman worked to keep his car out front, but was unable to get it done with Anderson driving home with the checkered for the third week in a row, Corey Madden in Second, Derrick Rohe in third, and Chuck Madden in fourth.

Wam Performance Sport Mods drove out on the dirt hoping to finish fifteen laps this week but didn’t make it to the green flag before cars were tangled on the front stretch. Officials worked to reset the line up, and the Sport Mods gave it another go. When the class finally finished a lap under the green flag, Jon Plowman had the lead with Jared Hansen ready to make a pass around him. Hansen used a restart to power into the lead with the Jesse Sobbing setting sights on him from the second spot. Time ran out on the class with 8 laps still to go and a green, white checkered dream dangling in front of the sport mod drivers. Sobbing raced low on the clean restart to take the lead as the class hit the half way mark. Hansen stayed on his rear push bar and began to look low for an opening as the laps finally began to tick by. Sobbing held on to take the trip to O’Reilly Victory Lane with Hansen taking second, Tanner Powers in third and Dylan Book in fourth.

Pizza Ranch Stock Cars thundered on to the speedway and Chris Ullrich grabbed the top spot as the drivers came up to speed on the dirt at Shelby County Speedway. In an unusual caution plagued start, several cars came together on the front stretch Adam Harman’s stock car rolling over and landing on Todd Mabbitt’s hot rod. All drivers involved we found to be okay but the red flag brought the racing to a stop, as wreckers worked to clear the carnage. Back under green, Chris Ullrich continued to lead as Jeff Anderson drove hard in second place, with damage to his front end and a loose hood flapping. With four to go, Anderson was unable to hold it any longer and spun out on the front stretch ending his night on the hook end of a tow truck. Dustin Smith moved into his spot and drove hard to take Ulrich and the checkered flag. Ullrich finished second, Tim Bengard third and Brian Blessington in fourth.

The Budweiser Late Models rocketed onto the track with a growing field of 16 cars and as the green flagged dropped and the decibels jumped, Vance Tonak took hold of the lead and looked to develop an uncatchable lead. Josh Most dug in holding the third spot behind Vic Lovejoy before Lovejoy experienced trouble with his Late Model Machine and took the hard left to the pits. Most reeled in Tonak as they took the dance for first way out front before Most took the lead. Most took the trip to O’Reilly Victory Lane with Tonak in second, Don Beckstrum in third, Mel Zeitner in fourth and Corey Zeitner in fifth.

Pitts Chiropractic Modifieds powered onto the track Shane Demey-Shields took the lead and held on as challengers came on strong. Nate Caruth worked in around him after a caution restart and Bub Lerette followed him to the second spot. Jeff Jones pushed Demey-Shields back another spot as he powered into third. Fans were on the edge of their seat during an exciting two lap run down where Nate Caruth took the checkered flag with LeRette settling for second, Jeff Jones third, Shane Demey-Shields and Dan McKeighan finishing out the top five.
