Preston and Dominacki get Mid-Season Wins at Davenport
by  Mike McGuire

DAVENPORT, Ia. (June 25, 2010) – The first Friday of Summer brought the Mid-Season Championships to the Davenport Speedway.  Despite the three inches of rain that fell this past week, the racetrack was fairly dry and firm, providing for some great racing action.

Mark Preston of Port Byron, won the Petersen Plumbing and Heating IMCA Late Model feature in dominant fashion, leading 24 of the 25 laps. Preston took the lead from Leroy Brenner on lap two, en route to his first win of the season. Behind Preston, there was fierce competition for the remainder of the top five spots.

Stephan Kammerer held second until late in the race when Ray Guss Jr. muscled his way into the number two slot. Kammerer held on to finish third, just ahead of Kevin Blum. Matt Ryan rounded out the top five.

‘The Dominator’, Bob Dominacki captured his first feature win of the season at Davenport in the Goacher Towing Pro Mods. Matt Stein led the first four laps of the race before he started swapping the lead back and forth with Chad Patch. Patch would win that battle and held the lead until Dominacki made his move on lap 12. Dominacki would lead to the checkers, with Thad Wilson racing his way to second. Patch would hold on for third, while Doug Crampton and John Bull finished fourth and fifth respectively.

Scott Griffin led the first three laps of the Koehler Electric Street Stock feature. On lap four, Joe Beal, in his own racecar, took the lead and held it for a handful of laps. Lap nine saw Matt Werner get under Beal in turns three and four, for the second lead change of the race. Despite three yellows and a red flag, Werner would hold serve all the way to the checkered flag. Beal would hold on to second, with Jeremy Marquette third, Bryan Ritter fourth, and Rob Nylin fifth.

The EMS IMCA Modifieds put on a good show, as Jerry Pratt won his second Davenport trophy of the season. Pratt took the lead from Tood Dykema on lap two of the fifteen lap main, and never looked back. That was a good thing, as Terry Rentfro stormed his way from deep in the field, to a close second place finish. Jake Waterman took third, with Ray Cox Jr. fourth, and Hunter Wilson fifth.

With twenty 4 Stocks starting, everyone knew the feature would be exciting. The action started with the green flag as Andy Maberry rolled his car in turn one. Andy walked away from the wreck. When the race restarted, Kyle Rhoads grabbed the lead. Rhoads’ lead did not last long as Luke Thurness moved his way to the front, after stating tenth.

Mike Morrow, who started one spot further back than Thurness, wrestled away the lead on lap nine and drove to his third win of the season. Thurness would cross the line second, but was disqualified in post-race inspection. The runner-up position went to Chris James. James was followed by Jason Blocker, Bill Morrow, and Rhoads.

Stock car racing action returns to the Davenport Speedway next Friday night, July 2nd, with the Midwest Jalopies as an added attraction.
