Mike Garland Earns IMCA LM win at Davenport
by  Mike McGuire

DAVENPORT, Ia. (July 2, 2010) – Fans and racers alike kicked off the July 4th weekend with dirt track fireworks, Friday at the Davenport Speedway. The Midwest Jalopies’ racing coupes were also racing as an added attraction.

Mike Garland of Morrison, Illinois, roared to victory in the Petersen Plumbing and Heating IMCA Late Model feature. Garland started third and battled with pole sitter Marty Diercks for the lead through the first half of the race, swapping the lead several times. In lapped traffic, Garland dove under Diercks on lap twelve and took the lead for good.

Ray Guss Jr. started eighth, slowly worked his way to the front, and passed Diercks for second coming to the white flag. Diercks would settle for a well deserved third, with Mike Murphy Jr., and Stephan Kammerer completing the top five.

Doug Crampton returned to early season form, taking his fourth feature win of the season in the Goacher Towing Pro Mod division. Chuck Hanna drove to the lead from the drop of the green and built a decent lead before the caution flag waved on lap 8. On the restart, Crampton made his move, using the bottom of the track to get by Hanna for the lead.  Bob Dominacki, who started last, got to within a couple of car lengths of Crampton at the checkers, but would finish in the runner-up spot. Hanna would finish third, ahead of Thad Wilson and Tim Arp.

Despite being only 12 laps, the Koehler Electric Street Stock feature had five different leaders. Matt Jefferson led early before giving way to Phil Anderson. Anderson, Jeremy Marquette, and Scott Griffin passed the lead around until Anderson was involved in a late race caution. After the restart, Griffin put his ride out front, but on the final lap spun in turn two. The race ended under green, with Marquette getting his first win of the year. Rob Nylin took second, followed by Cary Brown, Aaron Burroughs, and Bruce Fosdyck Jr., in that order.

Mike Fluegel posted the win in dominating fashion, in the EMS IMCA Modified feature. Fluegel wrestled the lead away from Matt Wilson on lap five of the 15-lapper and managed to hold the lead through four more cautions before taking the win. Dan Klatt would the remainder of the pack to finish second, with Jerry Pratt third. Ray Cox Jr. took fourth, just ahead of Terry Rentfro.

After being DQ’d last week, Luke Thurness came back with a vengeance Friday night. Thurness led nine laps of the ten lap 4 Stock feature. Thurness started in the eighth position and took the lead after a lap two restart. Bill Morrow ran in the top five the entire race, crossed the line in second, but was disqualified in post–race inspection. Mike Morrow was credited with second, Mitch Bielenberg third, and Brandon Dahl fourth.

Terry Mattly of East Moline, won the Midwest Jalopies feature race in a ’35 Chevy. Second was Matt Picray with Bob Mingst third. Chris Gillmore won the heat.

Next Friday, July 9th, is Diercks Family Racing Kid’s Night featuring Crumbo the Clown and bike races for the kids.
