Vohringer and Kohl Get First Wins of Year
BY: Ed Potter

MAQUOKETA, IOWA (July 3) - What a gorgeous night for racing Saturday at Jackson County Speedway.  The qualifying races went pretty quickly as only two cautions flew in the entire six divisions of qualifying.  Joey Veach came from his third place starting spot to take the lead of the 4-Stock feature on the first lap.  Veach led the pack until a fifth lap caution came out.  On the restart Jake Ellithorpe moved out front and went on for his second win of the season with Scott Booth second.  It appeared Rob Harding Sr. took third, but his car did not pass post race inspection and he was disqualified.  This moved Jake Montoya up to third with Brandon Jewell fourth and ryan Schilling fifth.  Lane Vohringer and Mitch Bielenberg were the heat winners.

When Kile Vohringer came in the pit gate he had painted his car blue instead of it’s usual white.  He said he had to change his luck somehow and it looked like it might have worked as he won his Hobby Stock heat race.  In the feature Matt McGranahan took the early lead with Vohringer taking over on lap two.  Despite two mid-race cautions Vohringer was not to be denied as he went on for his first trip to victory lane this season.  On the white flag lap Justin Yarolem moved in to take second over Nate Yoerger’s third.  Shawn Flagel was fourth with Andy Wagener rounding out the top five.  In victory lane Vohringer remarked “Blue Works”.  Mike McGarry took the other heat race.

The first caution of the IMCA Modified feature fell before a lap was scored as front row starters, Bill Kretschmer and Joe Anders got together coming for the green, sending Anders off the track and Kretschmer into the guard rail under the flag stand.  On the restart Cory Bauer went to the point and three laps later he was fighting off the challenges of Terry Rentfro.  At lap eight Rentfro edged out front and the races only other caution flew for debris.  Rentfro went back out front on the restart and held on to go for his second win of the season, with Bauer chasing him all the way.  Matt Irwin came from his ninth place starting spot to take third with Keith Feller fourth. Second heat winner, Marty Scheckel was fifth over first heat winner Mike Fuller’s sixth.

Street Stock heat winner, Kerry Dake snatched the early lead of the feature and after the first lap the races only caution flew.  On the restart Dake went back out front with Kevin Brame in tow.  On lap three Brame went by Dake to take the lead with Dan Mohr and Chip Kohl right on his tail.  At lap six Kohl moved by Brame to take the lead bringing Mohr with him.  Soon Kohl and Mohr were putting on one heck of a show for the lead often running side by side with Kohl on the high side and Mohr right inside of him.  Kohl held on to take his first Jackson County win of the season with Mohr right on his tail for second.  Joe Bonney was third with Mitch Schmitz taking fourth.  Brame held on for fifth.

Davey Hammond jumped into the early lead of the Gade Racing Engines/Shirts ‘n’ Stuff Pro Modified feture with Jake Bowman taking over on lap three.  One lap later heat winner, Mitch Morris flew off turn one to bring out the first caution and become the races only casualty.  On lap seven Ray Guss Jr. got by Bowman to take the lead and two laps later Bowman brought out the races only other caution as he spun in turn four.  On the restart Cox went back out front as the first three cars separated themselves from the rest of the field.  For the next eight laps the real racing to watch was in the second group of four cars.  Cox went on for his second win of the year with Bart Miller second and Doug Crampton third.  Bowman came back to take fourth over Brian Webb’s fifth.

B & D Pit Stop IMCA Late Model action saw Mitch Current lead the first lap of the feature and lose his driveshaft coming down the front chute bringing out the first caution.  On the restart first heat winner, Bryan Klein went out front.  In the first nine laps the caution flew a total of seven times and Klein soon had Ray Guss Jr. and Terry Neal on his tail by the time cautions stopped flying.  On the tenth lap restart Klein held the lead and the race went on caution free.  At lap twelve Guss went out front with Klein right on his tail.  Lap traffic started at lap eighteen and Neal picked the right lane as he got by Klein to move into second.  Soon Guss and neal were running side by side in a battle for the lead.  Once again Neal chose the right lane by a lapped car and edged out front on lap twenty.  Once again Neal and Guss were running side by side.  Guss edged out to lead lap twenty-one with Neal coming back on lap twenty-two.  Neal took his third trip to victory lane of the season with Guss second and Klein third.  Second heat winner, Ryan Duhme was fourth with Doug Nigh coming back to take fifth after being involved in one of those early cautions.
