SHELBY COUNTY SPEEDWAY RACE SEASON HEATS UP
By Shannon Lowe

HARLAN, IA (August 2) - KNOD Kool Gold Sport Compacts kicked off the feature racing at Shelby County Speedway with some excitement when David Knoell, Sr. slid as he drove through turns one and two causing a multicar collision including a late hit by Cory Kyle which had Kyle’s car over on its top. The restart had David Knoell, Jr. bringing the pack up to speed with cars stacked five wide under the flag stand. Tom Kat Summerfield grabbed hold of the lead with Troy Knoell racing behind him in second as Jaime Mahlberg and Bryan Smith battled for third. Mahlberg held the edge to bring home third behind Tom Summerfield who won the trophy, Troy Knoell in second. Bryan Smith finished fourth followed by David Knoell in fifth.

Country Tire Hobby Stocks take the drop of the green flag at Shelby County Speedway with more luck. Jason Kohl of Missouri Valley took the early lead but Chuck Madden drove hard and as they raced toward the halfway point, Madden looked to challenge low as he exited turn two, but a caution reset the pack handing the lead back over to Kohl and placing Chuck Madden side by side with Shannon Anderson for the restart. Anderson moved high to slingshot past both Madden and Kohl, but Madden grabbed hold of Anderson’s rear bumper and held on as the race behind them got red hot with Jason Fusselman, Adam Hensel and Joel Tigges challenging Kohl. Adam Hensel dropped back from the challenge as Madden also dropped off and took the hard left into the pits handing the race over to Anderson who finished unchallenged followed by Jason Kohl, Joel Tigges, Jason Fusselman and Corey Madden.

Willard Auto Machine Sport Mods took the glassy track on the high banks of Shelby County Speedway and Mike Pruitt hurried out to the early lead as Dylan Book wove his way through traffic on his way to the front. Book worked his way into second and whittled the distance to Pruitt taking the lead from the high lane with nine laps to go. Book drove uncontested to take the white flag as he worked into lap traffic before an untimely caution brought the pack up for a green white checkered run down. Book maintained his lead to take the double checkered flags followed by Mike Pruitt, Jim Lampe, David Hulsebus and Jesse Sobbing

Pizza Ranch Stock Cars brought the competition on the dirt up a notch with racing three wide through every corner. Allan Schmidt took off with the lead as behind him Kenny Hansen, Bill Osbahr and Dustin Smith raced hard, trading places in the second, third and fourth spots. Smith and Osbahr used a restart to dig in and pass Schmidt with Osbahr using the high side and Smith the low lane. Keith Knop and Jeff Anderson rushed to make their move and leapt past Osbahr into the second and third spots as Hansen drove into fifth. Anderson and Knop kept pace with one another as lap after lap ticked by leaving Smith to take the victory. Anderson finished second, followed by Knop, Osbahr and Hansen.

Mark Plowman led the Budweiser Late Models out on the speedway but Josh Most worked his wide bodied hot rod through traffic and around Plowman as the race behind him began to spread out. Jay Stewart had trouble holding on to the slick track and slid his car sideways in turn two but gathered the car back up and drove hard to make up the spots he lost as the race stayed under the green flag. Most picked up the win followed by Mark Plowman, Jeff Segebart, Jay Stewart and David Livingston.

Twenty one cars took the green flag in the Pitts Chiropractic Modified feature race and a pack of number 2 race cars battle for the lead with Dale Ransom and Dan Rhiley holding the top spots as Big Red Monson traveled the extreme high side looking to make up some ground a few spots behind them. Dangerous Dale Ransom found a good line and took the lead from Rhiley and Rhiley washed up the track nearly knocking Monson over the edge on the west end of the track. Monson held on as Rhiley fell back. Monson continued to use the high side of the track to slash at the lead Ransom held. From deep in the pack Nick Deal began to work his way forward but with the pack spreading out around the track, his progress was slow. With four laps to go, trouble on Monson’s machine had him headed to the pits and Dale Ransom ran the remaining laps unchallenged followed by Shane Demey, Nick Deal, Scott Carlson, and Robert Tippery.

WAM Performance Parts Sport Mods ran their King of the Hill races with eight cars qualified for the head to head, tournament style race. Jesse Sobbing knocked Mike Pruitt out in round one and Jim Lampe out in round two. On the other end of the bracket, Dennis Cook took on Dylan Book in round one and Cook moved into round two to face off with Dylan Peterson before moving into the championship round. Dennis Cook won the crown in the final round.

Next week Shelby County Speedway features the Dwight Wrich Memorial and Fan appreciation night. Fans will find grandstand tickets at the gate priced at only $5! Gates open at 5pm with hot laps at 6:15 and racing will be underway at 7 pm.
