Local races have big impact on IMCA Championship

DAVENPORT, Iowa (August 26, 2010) – As the 2010 racing season draws to a close, a pair of local races will help determine the IMCA Late Model national champion.

The final weekend in August is the last opportunity for racers to gain points and wins toward the late model title. That includes Season Championship events this Friday at the Davenport Speedway and Saturday at the Jackson County Speedway in Maquoketa.

Through August 15th, Ray Guss Jr., of Milan, Ill., held a slim six point lead over Terry Neal of Ely, Iowa. Last weekend, Neal won at the Jackson County Speedway and the Dubuque Fairgrounds Speedway. Guss finished second to Neal at Jackson County and won at Quad City Speedway.

The IMCA Late Model national champion is determined by a driver’s twenty best finishes during the season and bonus points. Bonus points are awarded to a driver who wins a track championship. The bonus is based on the average car count at that track during the season. A driver is awarded one track championship for bonus points in the Late Model division. If a driver gets more than one track championship, the highest number is used.

Guss has a four point lead over Neal at the Jackson County Speedway and is also leading the point standings at the Davenport Speedway and Quad City Speedway. Neal is also locked in a tight points battle at Dubuque Fairgrounds Speedway.

In event of a tie, the champion is determined by most feature wins.

Track titles will also be determined in all weekly divisions this weekend at Davenport Speedway and Jackson County Speedway. Friday’s races at the Davenport Speedway are sponsored by Kile Motorsports, while Saturday in Maquoketa it will be ‘Racing to a Cure for ALS Night’ at the Jackson County Speedway. ‘Racing to a Cure for ALS Night’ is sponsored by S.C. Oberbreckling Excavating & Construction.

On Friday, pit gates at Davenport open at 4 p.m. and the grandstand opens at 5pm. Hot laps are at 6pm and racing starts at 6:30pm.

For ‘Racing to a Cure for ALS Night’ on Saturday, the start of the racing program has been revised. Pit gates at the Jackson County Speedway open at 4 p.m. and the grandstand opens at 4:30pm, as usual. Hot laps will be at 6:30pm and racing starts at 7pm, for this event only.
