Shelby County Speedway Features KSOM Night at the Races
By Shannon Lowe

HARLAN, IOWA (August 31) - KSOM night at the races brought fans and racers together to celebrate “All the Best Country” and with dirt track gusto.  As the first green flag dropped, Caine “The Bandit” Mahlberg drove out to the early lead with a full class of KNOD Sport Compacts digging in behind him.  Tom Summerfield pushed his way through traffic to gain the second spot and the top two drivers put themselves in a different zip code before trouble deep in the pack sent cars spinning into each other on the front stretch.  Jaime Mahlberg was charged with the contact and sent to the pits for rough driving while the racers worked back into the correct line up.  The restart gave Summerfield the opportunity to gain the lead but Caine Mahlberg kept it close as Bryan Smith battled for third pushing Cory Kyle back to fourth.  Summerfield used the high road to work his way out to a substantial lead and took the trip to O’Reilly Victory Lane followed by Caine Mahlberg, Bryan Smith, Cory Kyle and Merv Chandler.

Jason Kohl rallied to the lead early in the Hobby Stock feature race as Shannon Anderson picked his way through traffic behind him.  A caution set Kohl up for a nightmare restart with the comfortable cushion he had built in front of Anderson gone and Anderson hungry for another win..  Cory Madden followed Anderson around Kohl to land the second spot and stuck to Anderson’s bumper to finish second as Anderson locked in the Country Tire Hobby Stock Track Championship at Shelby County Speedway.  Jason Kohl, Kurt Hansen, and Dusty Van Horn rounded out the top five.

Tanner Powers challenged Taimon Wehr in the WAM Performance Sport Mods and settled into the lead as the pack behind him began to spread out and top cars drove through traffic toward the front.  Crazy Racing’s Jesse Sobbing drove hard to gain a top five spot and worked around Wehr to third as Dennis Cook began to reel in Powers.  Cook took the lead out of turn two but a caution set the speedway for a green white checkered showdown.  Powers dug in low but Jesse Sobbing hooked up on Cooks rear push bar and the two cars freight trained around Powers.  Sobbing grabbed the lead but Cook snapped it back coming out of turn four to take the trip to O’Reilly Victory Lane followed by Jesse Sobbing, Tanner Powers, Taimon Wehr and Jonathan Plowman.

Pizza Ranch Stock Cars dug in for the chase as Randy Biederman pulled out to the early lead with Kenny Hansen challenging hard.  Hansen brought the race to the high side but lost the handle on his hot rod and dropped a handful of spots before gathering the car back up and battling back into third.  A restart gave Jeff Anderson a golden opportunity to gain the lead and he took it but a caution gave it right back to Biederman.  Anderson put on a repeat performance but Keith Knop and Dustin Smith also made a run for the lead and contact had the top four cars sliding around the speedway.   Anderson was charged with the contact and was set back a few spots as Dustin Smith found a lane around Biederman and took it with Knop all over his tail and looking to the inside.  Knop tried the high side on the final lap but couldn’t make up the ground as he followed Dustin Smith across the finish line.  Bill Osbahr, Randy Beiderman, and Jeff Anderson rounded out the top five.

BJ Bruck led the Pitts Chiropractic Modifieds out onto the speedway with Robert Tippery and Dale Ransom both making a move to challenge.  Ransom got a good grip on the top side of the speedway and rode the ridgeline to the lead. Hard chargers behind him wouldn’t leave him there unchallenged as Ryan Webb chased him down on the high side and Robert Tippery passed him by using the low side.  With Ransom out of his line he lost control of his car and ricocheted back through the pack, finally tangling with last week’s winner Craig Reetz.  Webb raced away from Tippery and Jeff Jones moved into the second spot leaving Tippery holding on to third.  Jeff Jones plowed the low lane to best Webb and the race was on as Scott Carlson dug his way into to third.  Jones took the victory with Webb and Carlson finishing second and third respectively followed by Jeff Stephens and Chad Preul.

Budweiser Late Models chased a championship title as Vic Lovejoy took the first lap lead.  Josh Most railed around the high side to take the lead from Lovejoy and Kevin Sather worked his way up to challenge Lovejoy for second.  Deep in the pack the Zeitner cars began moving through traffic fighting for every spot along with current points leader, Jay Stewart.  With a slick track keeping the Late Model Drivers out of the gas, the race became a game of finesse with Josh Most cruising to victory followed by Al Zeitner, Kevin Sather, Mel Zeitner and Jay Stewart whose fifth place finish was just enough to hand him the 2010 Budweiser Late Model Track Championship.

Fans kept their seat for the Atlantic Bottling Coca-Cola Stock car King of the Hill tournament racing as guest flagman Jared Hansen presided over the contest.  Eight cars began the tournament but Keith Knop and Randy Biederman faced off for the championship and Keith Knop won the crown and the Stock Car King of the Hill title.

This week at Shelby County Speedway, fans will enjoy the festivities of Championship Night at Shelby County Speedway as the points race and the regular season racing comes to an end.  SCS Staff and racers will then turn their attention to the Tiny Lund Races to be held on Friday, September17 and Saturday, September 18th.  For more information and complete results, check out the Shelby County Speedway Website at www.racescs.com.
