Races, Records & Ratings - Brett Moffitt Is on a Roll

Grimes, IA (April 9, 2011)  -- After a decisive win in the NASCAR K&N Pro Series East season opener at Greenville-Pickens Speedway in Greenville, SC, Brett Moffitt, driver of the No. 00 Michael Waltrip Racing Toyota, a native of Grimes, IA, finds himself at the top of NASCAR’s Hunter Index.  The Hunter Index was launched in 2010 on NASCARHomeTracks.com as a monthly power poll, designed to highlight standout performances in NASCAR’s developmental series.  Drivers are ranked by a panel of twelve auto racing writers from across North America and two NASCAR representatives.

David Smith of DavidSmithMotorsports.com commented, “Brett Moffitt is the poster child for the NASCAR Home Tracks program.  He developed his pavement ability after spending time on dirt for a few years, and now he is the benchmark performer of the K&N Series.  At Greenville, he was untouchable.”

Moffitt drove for Joe Gibbs Racing during 2010, where he scored two wins and was the Championship runner-up, winning the closing event of the 2010 season at Dover, DE.  Over the winter, Moffitt signed with Michael Waltrip Racing (MWR), and he seems to have picked up right where he left off.  It has been said that the only thing that changed was the uniform.

The 18 year old driver adjusted quickly to his new team and set the fastest pace in the first practice session of 2011.  Moffitt then backed up his practice speed by earning the pole for the 150 lap season opener.  His time of 20.534 seconds (87.659 mph) was good enough to eclipse the previous qualifying record set by Joey Logano in 2007.

“To unload so fast right off the truck is just unbelievable,” Moffitt said.  “I knew these guys had great cars, and we just clicked right away.  Any time you can beat a record Joey held is an awesome feeling.”

Moffitt showed his strength from the drop of the green flag and jumped out to an early lead.

In the closing laps, Moffitt held off a late race charge from second place Coleman Pressley to claim his first win of the 2011 season and the fifth victory of his young NASCAR career.  In spite of eleven caution periods, Moffitt led all 150 laps in the event and collected every bonus point awarded, becoming the first driver since 2005 to lead every lap in a race in this series.

“This is a dream come true,” Moffitt said.  “I knew the MWR team would give me opportunities like this, but I wasn’t expecting it to happen this soon.  To start the season this way with a new team is incredible.  Mike Greci and the guys gave me a great car.  I knew after testing here that we were going to have the car to beat.  Hopefully, we can continue the momentum and never look back.”

In addition to being on top of the Hunter Index, Moffitt leads the NASCAR K&N Pro Series East Championship standings by twenty points over his closest competitor.

As a result of Moffitt’s dominating win at Greenville-Pickens Speedway, he was also honored to be a guest on NASCAR Race Hub on Speed TV, an amazing experience for the young racer from Grimes, IA.

The NASCAR K&N Pro Series East heads next to South Boston Speedway in South Boston, VA on April 16th.  Moffitt earned his first career NASCAR victory at South Boston, where he has finished in the top ten in both of his previous starts.
