Local Racers Shine on Opening Night at Shelby County Speedway
By Shannon Lowe

HARLAN, IA (May 5, 2011) - Shelby County Speedway kicked off their opening night at the races under clear skies with Hy-Vee Night at the Races.  Fans enjoyed a fast paced night of racing, with the addition of new race director Kenny “Cowboy” Wulf and RaceCievers, the action kept moving from the drop of the first green flag to the final double checkers.

Tony Kerger sprinted to the early lead in the KNOD Sport Compact feature, with Tom Summerfield hot on his trail.  Jason Kroeger worked through the pack toward the front but found it hard to get around Tom Kerger.  Summerfield worked the inside track and edged toward Kerger to take the lead with two laps to go.  But leaving turn four on the final lap, Summerfield lost power and Tony Kerger rushed past him to take the checkered flag followed by Summerfield, Jason Kroeger, Jesse Totten and Tom Kerger.

Shannon Anderson powered to an early lead with a full field of Petersen Motors Hobby Stocks behind him and true to form the rest of the pack found it difficult to chase him down.  Wild Willie Ransom struggled to hold onto the second spot as the pack behind him started pushing their way past.  Corey Madden was the first racer to find his car in the clear followed by Jason Fusselman, Andy Boeckman and Tanner Powers.  Boeckman wasted little time clearing a path to Anderson and finally plowed past him on the bottom side of the front stretch.  Powers worked his way around Fusselman to gain the fourth spot just before the double checkers.  Top five finishers were Andy Boeckman, Shannon Anderson, Corey Madden, Tanner Powers and Jason Fusselman.

Mike Brown gained a few spots on the first lap of the Budweiser Sport Mod feature but Dennis Cook found himself the leader with Jon “the Wild Child” Plowman dogging him every lap.  An early restart gave Plowman the chance to whittle but also brought Jesse Sobbing alongside for a head to head restart.  Plowman stripped Cook of the lead with a good drive to the inside just off the front stretch.  A second caution sets the racers up for another run down with Plowman on a row of his own, followed by Sobbing and Cook on his rear push bar.  Sobbing out-raced Cook for the second spot and then worked to reel in Plowman.  Plowman managed to block Sobbing’s attempts and crossed the finish line first followed by Sobbing, Jared Hansen, Dennis Cook and Dylan Book.

Kenny Hansen shot to the lead from his front row starting spot as the Pizza Ranch Stock Cars took the green flag but Brian Blessington was on the move behind him along with Mike Harris in tow.  Harris used the whole track to move into the second spot and then slid underneath Hansen a lap later.  Hansen came right back at him on the low side as Keith Knop worked into position on the high side.   Hansen got loose on the east side of the track, and lost ground to the front runners as Knop drove past Harris on the high side and worked his way out to a commanding lead.   It was a two car run off for second as Mike Hansen and Brian Blessington crossed the finish line side by side.  Harris edged Blessington for second and the pair was followed by Kenny Hansen and Bill Reetz to round out the top five.

WAM Performance Parts Late Models brought their usual thunder to the SCS with Barry Sorensen taking the early lead followed by a hard charging pack.  Josh Most dug into the dirt and attacked the distance to Sorensen chasing him down in a handful of laps.  Most used the inside lane to slingshot past Sorensen as the late model rockets spread out around the track.  Most worked his way into lap traffic and the slow down gave Sorensen the chance to catch him. Sorensen retook the lead as Most limped to a stop with a flat tire with only four laps to go.  Sorensen rocketed out front sporting his new “Lightning McQueen” colors and took the checkered flag followed by Dave Livingston, Jay Stewart, Vic Lovejoy and Josh Most.

Big Red Monson and Ryan Webb brought the final race of the evening up to speed as a full field of Pitts Chiropractic Modifieds revved up behind them.  Monson snagged the early lead but a pile up on the front stretch brought the race under caution.  Monson dominated the restart with Wanniger and Webb battling for second behind him.  Wanniger took the spot and Andy Gage and Dale Ransom began to work to get around Web.   Ransom made it happen as Josh Most works in to challenge as well.  Most brought his familiar aggressive racing style to the open wheel class as he beat on Wanniger in an attempt to push his way past.  Wanniger held his ground and kept fighting and Dale Ransom sped past the two as they locked horns.  Monson raced unchecked to claim the checkered flag and the trip to O’Reilly Victory Lane followed by Dale Ransom, Luke Wanniger, Josh Most and Andy Gage.
