Harris and Wilson take Davenport Season Opener wins
by  Mike McGuire

DAVENPORT, Ia. (May 6, 2011) – The Davenport Speedway finally got into high gear Friday night with the running of the Koehler Electric Season Opener. The evening was marked with a number of rememberances for individuals connected to the speedway, that passed away recently. The list included Hershel Roberts, who was laid to rest earlier in the day.

Going into the Petersen Plumbing & Heating IMCA Late Model feature, Ray Guss Jr., driving the Roberts family owned #58 had to be a sentimental favorite. However it was Brian Harris that got out to an early lead from his front row starting spot. Harris was still leading at the midway point of the race, while Guss had moved from fifth to third, behind Nate Buesling. Guss would pass Buesling a couple laps later and drive up to Harris’ rear bumper.

Guss was unable to mount a pass for the lead, as Harris took the checkers. Guss finished second, with Buesling holding on for third. Doug Nigh and Stephan Kammerer rounded out the top five.

Late model heat race wins went to Guss, Terry Neal, and Rob Toland. Mike Garland won the consi.

The EMS IMCA Modified feature became a showcase for one of the division’s newest drivers, Thad Wilson. Wilson took the lead from pole sitter Casey Voss on lap three of the twenty lap main. Wilson would go untouched for the remaining laps for the win. Brian Webb was closing on Wilson at the end, but would settle for second. Mitch Morris finished third, ahead of John Ahlers and Voss.

Wilson, Voss, and Doug Crampton won the Modified heats. Matt Stein won the consi.

The Koehler Electric Street Stock main was the first feature of the night, to hit the track. RJ Gonzales led the first lap from the pole, before going side by side with Jeremy Marquette for several laps. Marquette would take the lead and drive away for his first win of the season. Gonzales would hold on for second. Cary Brown, Emily Gade, and Joe Bonney completed the top five.

The LuJacks Northpark Auto Plaza 4 Stock feature was anybody’s race. Chris James jumped out to the early lead and looked unbeatable. Just past the midway point, James slowed and pulled off the track. Wade Dahl led late in the race until he too started to slow. Aaron Hitt took over the point and took the checkered flag.

However Hitt was disqualified in post-race inspection. The victory went to Wade Dahl, with Luke Thurness second and Jason Blocker third.
