Shelby County Speedway Draws Crowd Despite Weather
By Shannon Lowe

HARLIN, IOWA (May 17, 2011) - Fans braved cold winds and the threat of rain as they headed to the grandstands last weekend at the Shelby County Speedway and were treated to an incredible car count as drivers from rained out tracks flocked to Harlan.

KNOD Sport Compacts kicked off the feature racing as Jason Kroeger and Caine Mahlberg battled for the lead.  As the two struggled, Tony Kerger picked his way past them both and flew around the speedway unchecked.  Contact on the front stretch had Caine Mahlberg sideways as he struggled to maintain control before body slamming the pit-side barrier, charged through victory lane and cruised to the pits without causing a caution.  Tony Kerger cruised to O’Reilly Victory Lane followed by Bronson Griffen in his second appearance at the Shelby County Speedway.  Dan Cleaver, Jaime Mahlberg and David Archibald rounded out the top five.

Peterson Motors Hobby Stocks charged under the green flag with a hungry group of drivers battling for the lead.   Shannon Anderson muscled his way through the pack to work his way into the top three and battled Dusty Van Horn and Andy Boeckman for the lead.  Boeckman and Anderson fought head to head as they passed Van Horn and left him to try and hold off Powers.  Powers out-ran him and moved in to challenge the front runners from third.  As Boeckman worked into lap traffic on the final lap, Anderson pulled alongside but came just short to finish second followed by Tanner Powers, Dusty Van Horn and Chuck Madden.

After a series of heat races and a B feature qualifying race a full field of twenty four Doll Distributing Sport Mod drivers gathered up their race machines and charged under the green flag.  Taimon Wehr worked his way out to the lead but Jon Plowman found a lane that suited him and darted past.  Jesse Sobbing moved in to challenge Wehr as Plowman checked out.   A caution with only four laps on the scoreboard set the racers up for a single file shoot out with Sobbing set on Plowman’s rear push bar.   Crazy Racing’s Jesse Sobbing used the catfish lane in turn one to edge Plowman after a slow restart as Jared Hansen leapt past both Smith and Wehr.  Dylan Book threw himself into the top five in the final laps finishing fourth in front of Wehr as Sobbing took the ride to O’Reilly Victory Lane.  Jon Plowman settled for second and Jared Hansen captured third.

Pizza Ranch Stock Cars powered their way out onto a rough track and Mike Nichols seized the lead.   Expert drivers, Clay Christian, Bill Osbahr, Dave Plowman, Brian Blessington, and Kenny Hansen lined up to challenge but Nichols held on to the top spot building momentum on each lap.  A caution with five to go had the stock cars lined up nose to tail for a single file restart that left the race up for grabs, Bill Osbahr railed out of turn four to draw alongside Nichol’s Medieval Chassis Monster for a side by side finish but Nichol’s held on to take the checkered flag followed by Clay Christian, Kenny Hansen and Keith Knop.

As temperatures continued to drop, the racing action began to heat up as yet another full field of cars took the track.  The wide bodied rockets flew around the track as Kevin Sather wound his way through the pack to land the top spot.  Josh Most worked to reel him in as Todd Cooney took on Al Zeitner for the third position.   Barry Sorensen drove past Zeitner and brought the race to Cooney from the long lane and then worked to run down Most and Sather.   A caution with four laps to go brought the pack together to race without lap traffic but Sather continued to dominate as he dashed under the checkered flag, however due to a rules infraction, he was disqualified in tech moving Josh Most into the top spot followed by Barry Sorensen, Todd Cooney, Jay Stewart and Al Zeitner.

Mike “Wahoo” Albertson railed his way to the lead in the Pitts Chiropractic Modified “A” feature but a string of cautions prevented him from developing any momentum.  Nick Deal used the low lane on a restart to grab the lead and pull away from Albertson as Josh Most drove around him on the high side.  After another round of cautions, the racers reached the time limit and Deal took the green flag as Most dug in under him to try to gain the spot.   With the engines working overtime through multiple cautions, Daniel Hilsebeck’s machine caught fire bringing out the red flag.  Officials decided to give the racers one more shot at a green flag finish and Deal brought the race back up to speed.  Most brought his open wheeled racer alongside Deal and tried for his traditional body check to propel him forward but cut his unprotected left front tire in the effort and caused the final yellow checkered flag, handing the trip to O’Reilly Victory Lane to Nick Deal followed by Chris Abelson, Jay Noteboom, Luke Wanniger and Brad Bergren.

Next week, racers and fans will celebrate the end of the school year with the kids “Nickel Toss”.  For up to date information regarding race night events, tickets, and results; go to www.racescs.com.
