OSBORN NABS HAWKEYE DOWNS LATE MODEL WIN
PLUMMER, HOUDEK, BALLARD REPEAT WINNERS

By Brad Grupe

CEDAR RAPIDS,  IA (May 27, 2011) - Despite sprinkles and rain showers early in the evening,  Hawkeye Downs Speedway was able to complete the evening’s racing program Friday night . After a rain delay of about an hour McGrath Auto Group “Racing for Relay” Night was underway.

Fans were treated to Free Admission by McGrath Auto Group in exchange for making a minimum $1.00 donation. Those donations were directed to the Relay for Life Program of the American Cancer Society. Fans also were able to participate in raffles and drawings during the evening with proceeds also benefiting Relay for Life.

During pre-race ceremonies, cancer survivors and fans took part in a track walk, completing a lap on the quarter-mile.

After two straight weeks of rainouts, action resumed in the Papa Johns Cup/ I-Wireless Championship Series with all six divisions in action.

Jeff Dvorak won the 6-lap  Promoters Choice Innovative Signs Trophy Dash to kick off the evening. This week six Sunline Hornets drivers battled for a piece of hardware for their mantle.

In the 20-lap Sunline Hornet feature, Derek Parrott out-powered Brad Chandler for the win after starting inside row five of the 18-car field. Chandler challenged for the lead in the closing laps but Parrott kept the “General Lee” stuck to the bottom and secured win. Lapped traffic also played a significant factor in the closing laps as drivers running side-by-side figured out which lane to take around the slower cars without giving up position.

Finishing behind Parrott and Brad Chandler were Nate Chandler, Jose DeJesus, and Dallas Chandler. Parrott is the third different winner in as many races this season.

Nathan Ballard made it three wins in three starts in the Barron Motor Supply Hobby Stocks but not without battling Roland Bohnsack during the early stages of the 15-lap feature. Matt Petrzelka finished a strong second while Jeremy Robbins ran another solid race, finishing third.  Bohnsack lost some ground in the closing laps as a tire was going down, possibly as a result of the earlier battle with Ballard,  but did finish fourth. Scott Siems was fifth.

Cory Houdek also scored his third win of the year in Coca-Cola Sportsmen. Dave Ballstaedt led much of the 20-lap feature but by lap fourteen Houdek was solidly on Ballstaedt’s rear bumper. Two laps later he made the winning pass.  Craig Stepanek ran a strong race in his first time out this season also slipping around Ballstaedt to secure second. Ballstaedt finished third while Ben Glascock was fourth and Josh Williams was fifth.

Many times when Barrington Hills, IL McGrath Powersports Legend driver Rachael Pinkerman shows up at Hawkeye Downs she ends up in victory lane at the end of the feature. Friday night it looked as though she might pick up her second win of the season but Rod McGlothlen had other ideas as he took the lead off a lap twelve restart and then held off any challenges from Pinkerman or Warren Ropp. The race had an uncharacteristic number of cautions which kept the field bunched throughout the race.

Finishing behind McGlothlen were Pinkerman, Warren Ropp, Al Diercks, and Matt Blake,

Tim Plummer used a pass in turn three on lap four to secure his third Budweiser Modified feature win of the season. Arlo Becker started on the point and led the early laps before a caution put Plummer squarely on his tail. Plummer found himself being chased by a very hard-charging Brian Gibson but on lap twelve Gibson lost the handle exiting turn four and spun bringing out caution.

Two laps later Ryan Luedtke and Arlo Becker tangled in turn two scrambling the running order and allowing Gibson to advance to second. Plummer cruised to the win from that point with Gibson finishing second. Luedtke recovered from the earlier incident to finish third wit Jason Beauregard crossing the strip in fourth. Steve Lindell was fifth in his first outing of the season.

The 30-lap Performance Concepts Late Model feature proved to be an exercise in patience despite some great racing amongst the season-high seventeen car field sandwiched between numerous cautions. Kyle Hinrichs led the first third of the race with Joey Gase and Brad Osborn both on the move toward the front. While Brad Osborn was putting himself in position to challenge for the lead Gase also moved into the picture and ended up slipping around Osborn for the second slot on lap eithteen.

Gase took the lead on lap twenty-three and shortly after that a frustrating parade of cautions slowed the action. O the last restart, after track conditions had changed drastically, Osborn was able to power by the leader Gase and motor to the win. Griffin McGrath also got by Gase on the last lap to finish second. Andy Edwards finished fourth behind Gase with Mason Mitchell finishing fifth.

Next Friday nightm June 3rd, is Cassil Motors Night with all six classes again in action.
