Smith gets rich with Smackdown win at Lee County

DONNELLSON, IA (May 27) – Rich Smith picked up the big paycheck at Lee County Speed¬way’s IMCA Modified Smackdown special Friday night.

Smith caught familiar foe Josh Foster late in the 30-lapper to earn the $2,000 winner’s share of the feature purse, plus another $845 in lap money. Foster ended in second, with Todd Shute, Dan Chapman and Daniel Hilsabeck rounding out the top five.

Foster, Smith, Chapman and Richie Gustin broke away from the rest of the 24-car field early on, swapping positions before a flat tire forced Gustin from the fray upfront.

A couple cautions tightened the field at midway, but neither yellow prevented stop Foster and Smith from pull¬ing away again.

Smith finally wrestled the lead away from Foster in the waning laps and cruised to the win, earn¬ing a spot on the 2011 Fast Shafts All-Star Invitational ballot in addition to the big payday.

Shute worked his way through traffic for the third place finish.

The special at Donnellson had been rescheduled from April 15 because of inclement weather.

Jim Gillenwater was first to the $500 checkers in the Karl Chevrolet Northern SportMod feature and Jeff Mueller was the $300 IMCA Sunoco Stock Car winner.
