GLASCOCK SCORES FIRST CAREER WIN ON VAN METER NIGHT

CEDAR RAPIDS, IA (June 17, 2011) - The third time was the charm as the weather finally cooperated Friday night allowing the twice postponed Fast Lane Friday presented by Van Meter Incorporated to go on as scheduled.

The annual event, sponsored by Van Meter, benefitted  the Children’s Miracle Network at the University of Iowa’s Childrens Hospital with donations from the fans, raffles and auctions along with some drivers donating their purse money to the very worthy cause.

All six divisions in the Papa Johns Cup/I-Wireless Championship Series were again battling for valuable championship points as well as Hard Charger Series points.

In Barron Motor Supply Hobby Stocks, Nathan Ballard returned to victory lane picking up his fourth win of the season. Ballard and Jeremy Robbins battled early exchanging the lead a couple times but Ballard prevailed with Roland Bohnsack rallying to finish second. Matt Petrzelka recovered from a tangle with 6 laps to go and finished third.

The most emotional win of the night came in the Coca-Cola Sportsmen division with Ben Glascock from Indianola picking up his first career win. Glascock has been a regular in the Sportsmen division for several years but hadn’t won a feature in either the old half-mile Sportsmen division or the new quarter-mile Sportsmen division that started this season. Glascock ran the high groove around the quarter-mile and eventually was able to pass Cory Houdek for the win. Craig Stepanek finished third behind Houdek.

It doesn’t seem to matter which car Rod McGlothlen runs in the McGrath Powersports Legends-he finds a a way to win. Friday night was no exception as he won his third feature in the third different car. This time he piloted the #77, usually driven by Warren Ropp to the win. Michael Weber, another familiar name to Hawkeye Downs regulars, chased McGlothlen for much of the race eventually settling for second. Al Diercks finished third.

For the second race in a row, Hawkeye Downs veteran driver piloted the #88 Modified normally driven by Arlo Becker and this time he was able to break Tim Plummer’s stranglehold on victory lane. The two tangled on lap eight sending Plummer to the rear but he quickly moved to the front on the restart but couldn’t catch Spaw. A wild last couple laps saw Ryan Luedtke hold off Plummer for second place. Luedke maintained second with Plummer finishing third.

The name Chandler continues to dominate the Sunline Hornets division and Friday night it was Nate’s turn to score the winners hardware. Hate led virtually the entire event, surviving a couple restarts along the way to secure the win. Jose DeJesus scored his highest feature finish, finishing second while Derek Parrott crossed the stripe in third.

In Performance Concepts Late Models, Tim Plummer took the lead from Brian Allen on lap three and never relinquished the lead the rest of the way.  When the checkers waved Plummer had a 1.6 second margin over the second place car of Brad Osborn. Andy Edwards posted another strong run finishing third while Mason Mitchell was fourth and Brian Allen was fifth. The win was the first of the season for Plummer.

Also on the card Friday night was the Van Meter Celebrity Pride Race which featured former Iowa Hawkeye Tim Dwight, KGAN/KFXA Sports Director Jarod Aarons, and Van Meter executive Mike Gassman. Dwight appeared to have things well in hand until a couple cautions bunched the trio and Gassman was able to pull ahead of the win.
