Four new winners at Davenport Mid-Season
by  Mike McGuire

DAVENPORT, Ia. (June 24, 2011) – Stock car racing action finally returned to the quarter-mile oval at the Davenport Speedway for the Casey’s General Stores Mid-Season Championships. An exciting night of racing yielded four first-time winners for 2011.

Joe Ross, of Thomson, Ill., took a dramatic win in the Petersen Plumbing & Heating IMCA Late Model feature. Ross grabbed the lead from Leroy Brenner on lap five of the 25-lap main. Ross cruised through the middle portion of the race, until he was reeled in by Mike Murphy Jr. Murphy tried Ross on both the high and low side, but to no avail.

Ross took his first feature win since returning from modifieds to the late model ranks. Murphy finished second with Stephan Kammerer third, Matt Ryan fourth, and Andy Eckrich fifth. Ross, Murphy, and Kevin Blum won late model heats. Justin Kay won the consi. Boone McLaughlin rolled his racecar in the consi, but was okay.

Matt Stein scored his first feature win on the season, in the EMS IMCA Modified division. Stein started on the pole and led the distance, despite several restarts, which kept bringing the field to his rear bumper.

Brian Webb continued his recent hot streak. Webb was mired around fifth or sixth for much of the race, but made a late race charge to earn a runner-up finish. Brian Bushong was sixth at the race’s final restart, but also made a late charge to take third. Mike Fluegel and Doug Crampton rounded out the top five.

For the first time in recent memory, a female stood in victory lane after a points race at Davenport. Emily Gade, of Clarence, Ia., dominated the Koehler Electric Street Stock feature. Gade started the race in the fourth position and took the lead on lap two, of the 15-lap race. Emily would survive two restarts and lead the remaining laps en route to the win.

RJ Gonzales was involved in an early race caution, but came back through the field to grab second on the final lap. Cary Brown was third, with Chris Lawrence fourth, and Henry Carson fifth.

The LuJacks Northpark Auto Plaza 4 Stocks may have saved the best race of the night for the last race of the night. With three and four-wide racing in the pack, the feature looked to be going green-white-checkered, but the race’s only caution came out on the final lap. Chris James, who had snatched the lead just before halfway, emerged with his first Davenport victory this year. Luke Thurness finished second. Aaron Hitt crossed the line third, but was disqualified in post race inspection. Dale Tucker was credited with third, followed by Brandon Dahl and Wade Dahl.

Next Friday (July1st) is Kid’s Night at the Davenport Speedway.
