Payne gets first feature win at CJ on Mid Season Championship night
By Dana Royer/CJ Speedway

COLUMBUS JUNCTION, IA (June 27, 2011) - CJ Speedway, Columbus Junction, Iowa, held its mid season championship night Friday, June 24 with  60 cars entered for competition in the five classes. Tad Payne, Muscatine, took the checkered flag for the first time in 2011 at CJ in the IMCA Stock Car feature. Other winners included Tyler Whalen, Riverside, getting win number four in the IMCA Sport Compact division,  Jason Masengarb, Colona, Il. continues his domination in the mod lite division getting win number five and Steve Stewart, Burlington,  returned to the winners circle after winning the modified feature. The Late Models were back this week with Matt Strassheim getting his second straight victory.

Tyler Whalen held a slim five point lead over John Whalen, Ainsworth, going into the nights action. Tyler  would extend that lead after taking the checkered by several car lengths as John Whalen would  finish back in the field in seventh. Bill Whalen would finish second in the sport compact feature  and James Roose, Grandview took third in the nine car field.

A familier face climbed out of his mod lite car when Jason Masengarb, Colona, Il. won his fifth feature of the year at CJ Speedway . Thirteen cars set the field for the twelve lap feature with Masengarb on the front row courtesy of his point lead.  Masengarb  pulled away early on from Robert Guss, who trailed Masengarb  by eleven points before the nights racing began. Guss  cross  the finish line to finish second behind Masengarb and Johnathon Huston would finish third.

Steve Stewart, Burlington, would also extend his lead in the points battle getting his fifth win this year. Alex Buffington, Wapello, and last week’s winner, would give chase to Stewart, who took the lead from his front row start, but wouldn’t be able to catch the leader as Stewart took the checkered flag and Buffington followed to finish second.

The IMCA Stock Car division continues to provide some exciting racing with sixteen cars setting the field for their fifteen lap main event. Wapello’s Kirk Kinsley, who was tied for the  points battle with David Hemsted and just one point ahead of Tad Payne, would take the early lead with Payne close behind. Kinsley would lead the field for the first nine laps.   Then a caution on lap ten allowed for Payne to close the gap and take the lead from Kinsley with Cole Simmons and Blaine Dopler joining the battle. Simmons would move into the second but wouldn’t have enough to catch Payne who went on to take the checkered flag by three car lengths.

The ground shaking late models were back at CJ Speedway with some new faces taking on the Louisa County track. Ten cars set the field for the twenty five lap feature with Matt Strassheim, Morning Sun and Sam Halstead, New London, on the front row. Halstead would take the early lead and worked to hold off Strassheim for the first thirteen laps. Strassheim made a couple attempts to pass Halstead finally getting the job done on lap fourteen. Tom Darbyshire would also pass Halstead on lap fifteen and set his sights on Strassheim. Although Darbyshire is the car owner of the 42s of Strassheim, that wouldn’t make any difference as Strassheim would go on to take the checkered flag for the second straight week. Darbyshire would finish second and Tommy Elston, Keokuk, would take third

Coming up this week, Friday, July 1 at CJ Speedway will be the Wapello Auto Parts and Kurts Garage 3rd Annual Fire Cracker 25 for IMCA Stock Cars who will be running a 25 lap feature. Also on the schedule will be the IMCA Sport Compacts, Mod Lites and Modifieds.
