Johnson tops Independence feature, Smith reigns as
World Products Great American Stock Series champ

INDEPENDENCE, Iowa (June 29, 2011) – One driver dominated while another clinched the World Products Great American Stock Car Series crown with a typically stellar run of his own Wednesday night.

Sean Johnson defended his home track turf, leading all but the first of 30 laps in winning the IMCA Sunoco Stock Car main event at Independence Motor Speedway.

Johnson earned $1,000 for the victory. Donavon Smith, the winner Tuesday at Marshalltown, secured the lion’s share of the tour point fund, in addition to a set of cylinder heads from World Products, by finishing third.

2010 champion Damon Murty was second. Trent Murphy raced from 21st starting to finish fourth while Devin Snellenberger, one of the four Wisconsin hotshoes among the six out-of-staters to make the main event, was fifth.

Murty uncharacteristically drew the pole but it was another local, outside row one starter Justin Temeyer, who led the first lap.

Johnson made his way to the front following an early restart and brought Murty along in pulling away from the pack, leaving Smith, Temeyer and Snellenberger to scrap for third.

Johnson got a lapped car ahead before the final yellow came out with nine laps left. He checked out again, crossing the stripe nearly half a straightaway ahead of Murty.

Another Wisconsin visitor, Brad Lautenbach, made the most of a restart in winning the Karl Chevrolet Northern SportMod main event.

Racer Hulin had run in front from the opening circuit but saw a comfortable lead erased when the yellow flag came out on the 13th of 20 laps.

The 11th starting Lautenbach and Hulin swapped the front spot the next two times around, then crossed the stripe in a dead heat before Lautenbach eased ahead for the $500 victory.

Hulin, Tyler Droste, Danny Dvorak and Tyler Hackett followed.
