Paris, Elston pick up their first wins at CJ Speedway
By Dana Royer

COLUMBUS JUNCTION, IA (July 16, 2011) - Point race action continued at CJ Speedway this week with Shane Paris, Quincy, Il., and Tommy Elston, Keokuk picking up first feature wins in the IMCA Stock Car and Late Model divisions respectively Friday night, July 15. Steve Stewart, Burlington, was back racing to his sixth modified feature win as was Jason Masengarb, Colona, Il., who also returned to the 4/10 mile picking up win number six. Tyler Whalen passed his dad Bill to get win number six as well as also winning the gunny sack race in the driver competition.

Jason Masengarb made his return to CJ Speedway after a couple weeks off a winner as he and Evan Epperson put on a show for the fans on the final two laps of the race. Epperson took the early lead in the eight car Mod Lite feature followed by Jonathon Huston. Huston briefly took the lead on lap three but Epperson would get his spot back one lap later. Huston would get too high on the back stretch on lap nine taking a ride up on the levee to bring out the caution with one lap to go. This set up a green, white, checkered finish with Epperson in the lead and five time winner Jason Masengarb now in the second spot. The two were bumper to bumper on the white flag lap but Epperson would get a little too high on the final lap and Masengarb would get past Epperson for the lead and went on to take the checkered flag. In the point race, Robert Guss leads Troy Phillpott 316 276.

It was a father and son battle in the IMCA Sport Compacts, and son took the win in the ten lap feature. Bill Whalen took the early lead at the drop of the green. Five time winner, Tyler Whalen closed in on dad as they raced side by side and bumper to bumper on laps six and seven. Then Tyler took the lead from his dad coming out of turn four on lap seven and would go on to take the checkered flag by several car lengths for win number 6. Tyler leads Merv Chandler in the point battle 334-322.

Twelve modifieds took to the track with Tim Sands, Conesville, taking the early lead from his front row start. Sands lead wouldnt last long as five time winner, Steve Stewart would take to the inside in turn two on the second lap to take over the leader position. Stewart would pull away from the field before a caution came out on lap five. This gave young Tanner Allen a chance to close the gap as he and Stewart would pull away from the field. Stewart was unstoppable pulling away from Allen who also held a comfortable lead over Sands for second. But the battle to watch was Sands, Zach Less and Wade Lee who were putting on a show for the fans. Stewart took an easy win followed by Allen and Tim Sands won the battle for third. Tim Sands holds a 14 point lead over Mark Winkel 348-334.

Thirteen of the fourteen IMCA Stock Cars started the fifteen lap feature with Lane Kaufman and Shane Paris on the front row. Paris, in his second night out at CJ Speedway, took the early lead and worked to hold off Jim Redmann for the first ten laps. On lap eleven, Redmann would slow in turn three and pull into the pits moving Tad Payne into the second position. Payne would seriously challenge Paris for the next three laps as Sky Griffith was working to hold off Cole Simmons for third. It was bumper to bumper action for the top four on the white flag lap. Payne pulled up on Paris bumper as they went down the back stretch. Coming out of turn four on the final lap Payne continued to stay with Paris but wouldnt be able to get past him for the lead as Paris took the checkered flag for his first win. Tad Payne leads Cole Simmons on the point race 334-315.

The late model feature saw Tommy Elston, Keokuk, take the checkered flag in the fifteen lap feature. Elston took the lead from his front row start with Tom Goble following. Elston was loving the slick track as he went on to take the checkered flag followed by Goble, and Jay Chenowth rounding out the top three. Andy Wink leads Jay Chenoweth in the point race 175-149.
