Three new winners at Davenport
by  Mike McGuire

DAVENPORT, IA. (July 22, 2011) – Warm temperatures and even hotter racing action could be found Friday night at the Davenport Speedway. And it didn’t take long for the action to heat up. In the very first heat race of the evening, Street Stock point leader, Jeremy Marquette was three-wide going down the backstretch and ended up flipping off turn three. Jeremy escaped without serious injury, his racecar was not so lucky.

Jeff Stevens of Davenport led the Petersen Plumbing & Heating IMCA Late Model feature flag to flag for his first feature win of the season. Stevens blistered the field despite a caution flag at lap ten which drew the field to his back bumper.

Mike Zemo Jr. challenged Stevens for the lead a couple of times before getting involved in a three-car battle for second. Zemo would finish in the runner-up spot with Nate Bueseling third, and Joe Ross fourth. Brian Harris nipped Ray Guss Jr., at the finish line for fifth.

Bueseling, Harris, and Guss were late model heat winners.

John Ahlers picked up his first feature win of the season in the EMS IMCA Modified division. Mike Fluegel took the early race lead from the pole position and led the first nine laps. Ahlers grabbed the lead from Fluegel on the high side and didn’t look back.

A caution flag on the final lap for a back marker, gave second to Brian Webb. Matt Stein finished third, ahead of Mitch Morris and Fluegel. Modified heat wins went to Ahlers, Webb, and Doug Crampton.

Timmy Current captured his second Koehler Electric Street Stock feature win. Current started ninth and took the lead from Emily Gade on lap eight of the fifteen lap race. Current would race on and easily take the checkers ahead of Chris Lawrence, who finished second. RJ Gonzales crossed the line third, but was later disqualified. That moved Emily Gade, Cary Brown, and Donnie Louck into third through fifth respectively. Jeremy Marquette came back from his heat race accident to finish the feature ninth, in Tim Hazen’s car.

A mad scramble on the first lap of the Lujack Northpark Auto Plaza 4 Stock feature saw Gene Potter come away with the lead. Potter worked hard to hold off a gaggle of cars that were trying to grab the top spot. But on this night, he was no match for Ross Neal. Neal, making his first visit to Davenport this season, would not be denied a place in the winner’s circle. Potter would hold on for second, with Mitch Bielenberg making a late race charge for third. Ken Poole and Wade Dahl completed the top five.

The racetrack at the Davenport Speed way will be idle the next two weeks due to the Mississippi Valley Fair. The next race will be Friday, August 12th, ‘Back to School-Kids Night’.
