Blum, Beal, and Thurness score Davenport wins
by Mike McGuire

DAVENPORT, Ia. (August 19, 2011) – With the regular season drawing to a close, the battle for points and tempers were heated Friday night at the Davenport Speedway. When the final checkered flag fell, there were three first time winners in victory lane.

The Petersen Plumbing & Heating IMCA Late Models put on an excellent show for the crowd. Pole sitter Bart Miller led lap one, with fellow front row starter, Leroy Brenner taking over on lap two. Brenner would lead until lap 18, when Kevin Blum took away the top spot. Blum’s lead would be short, as Ray Guss Jr. rocketed to the front on the high side.

As the lead duo approached lapped traffic, the slower cars were in Guss’ line. Blum would retake the lead on lap 23 and drive on to the victory, his first at Davenport this season. Guss would settle for second, with Marty Diercks third, Doug Nigh fourth, and Terry Neal fifth.

Miller, Guss, and Nate Bueseling won the heats.

There was another surprise early race leader in the EMS IMCA Modified feature. Craig Crawford from the outside pole, led until halfway in the 20-lap main. While in the lead, Crawford was working hard to hold off a charging Doug Crampton.

A lap ten caution reset the field and after the restart, Joe Beal would make his move. Beal took the point on lap eleven, and would fend off Crampton all the way to the checkers. Crampton finished second, with Matt Stein third, Bob Dominacki fourth, and Brian Bushong rounding out the top five.

Jeremy Marquette racked up another win in the Koehler Electric Street Stock class. Marquette’s seventh win on the season was probably the most unusual. Attrition and wrecks eliminated six of the eight starters by lap six. Marquette outdistanced Bryan Ritter the rest of the way to the finish.

LuJacks Northpark Auto Plaza 4 Stocks were not to be outdone in their feature. Chris James grabbed the early lead, going from fifth to first on lap one. Luke Thurness took the lead on lap seven, with Wade Dahl coming around to lead lap eight. These three drivers would battle for the lead over the next four laps, going three-wide several times.

At the checkers it was Thurness picking up his first official Davenport win of the season, with Chris James second and point leader Wade Dahl third. Brandon Dahl was fourth, with Steve Unzel fifth.

Powder Puff races were held as an added attraction. Ashley Claussen, Holly Wilson and Anna James were the winners.

Next Friday night, August 26th, is Season Championship night at the Davenport Speedway.
