Mueller, Cale close in LCS championship chase Cossel, Wenig, Smith also get wins as points finale looms
By Dewain Hulett - for Lee County Speedway

DONNELLSON, IA (August 19, 2011) – With only one week now remaining in 2011 points racing at Lee County Speedway, Friday night’s races cleared a lot of things up heading into the Aug. 26th’s IWireless Season Championship, but it also muddied the water a bit more in a pair of classes.

Tyler Cale won his second Budweiser IMCA Modified feature event, while Jeff Mueller made a last lap pass to win the Miller Lite IMCA Stock feature event. Both of those drivers closed their respective point deficits to three points heading into the final night.

Other winners included Jake Wenig, Donnellson Tire Hobby Stocks; Darin Smith, Sunline Auto Parts Wild Things; and Phillip Cossel, Shottenkirk Parts Express/GM Performance Parts IMCA Sport Mods.

Mueller won the closest feature of the night, when he made a pass of 14 lap leader John Oliver, Jr., on the 15th lap to pick up the win. He only led about three-quarters of a lap but it was enough to move two points closer to Matt Greiner in the chase for the point title. Greiner, the 2010 IMCA Stock Car champion, finished third and will need to finish ahead or within two spots of Mueller to take the title following next week’s season championship race.

In the Modified feature, Cale made the right moves early and found his way to the front and won by over a straight away. At one point in the feature Cale was actually the point leader, as Josh Foster, who was driving Ryan Cook’s car after totaling his car the previous event at Lee County, struggled to find his way toward the front. But, while Cale was cruising out front, Foster was methodically moving through the field, eventually finding his way to third, and was battling for second at the stripe. Foster lost two points to Cale on the night and will lead by three points heading into this weekend’s final points race. Jeff Waterman finished second.

An early race caution took away all the possible fun of an IMCA Sport Mods points battle for championship night, as Mueller, who was second in points, was caught up in a wreck on lap three of the feature event. He would eventually finish 11th in the race won by Cossel. Jim Gillenwater, who went into the night with the point lead, finished third and gained eight points on Mueller. Derek Coleman had a solid run as well finishing in the second spot.

The Hobby Stock points chase was at least set to have a question coming into the final week, but that disappeared after the race, which was won by Wenig. For Wenig, his streak continues, all season long at LCS he has either won the feature or not finished. The win marked his seventh win at the track this season. Dan Wenig finished second, and was the points leader coming into the night, while Ray Raker finished third, and was second in points coming in. Raker’s engine was claimed, by Michael Wenke, after the race. Raker refused the claim, losing his finish for the night and his points for the season. That puts Dane Fenton in a distant second with no chance of reeling in Dan Wenig, who will be the 2011 Hobby Stock point champion.

Smith, who had a comfortable lead coming into Friday night’s racing action, solidified his spot at the top with another win. He gained four more points on second place in points Nick Wilkerson, who finished fifth after a bad start. It is possible for Wilkerson to take the title, but it will have to be nearly a perfect storm. Chuck Fullenkamp finished second and Craig Bangert was third during Friday’s racing action.

The point season concludes this Friday night, Aug. 26, with the IWireless Season Championship at Lee County Speedway. It will be a great night for the kids, as the first 150 kids will receive a free Dilly Bar courtesy the Nick Wilkerson racing crew, and all kids will get the chance to take rides around the racetrack in a racecar. Racecar rides will start around 6:30 p.m., with racing set to begin at 7:30 p.m.
