By Dana Royer/CJ Speedway

COLUMBUS JUNCTION, IA (August 26, 2011) – Added money to the late model division at CJ Speedway courtesy of Richard Realty and Auction, The Thirsty Camel, Kile Feed and Grain, Elston Auto Repair, Wiele Chevrolet and Columbus Junction State Bank brought additional late models to the 4/10 mile track Friday night August 25. It was season champion night for the late models as well as the Mod Lites. Jay Johnson, West Burlington took the checkered flag in the 30 lap late model feature and Troy Phillpott, Muscatine, took the checkered flag in the final race of the season for the Mod Lites. Also getting wins were Tyler Whalen, Riverside (IMCA Sport Compacts), Kirk Kinsley, Wapello (IMCA Stock Cars), and Steve Stewart, Burlington (modifieds).

Coming up Friday, Sept. 2 will be the final race of the 2011 season at CJ Speedway for IMCA Sport Compacts, IMCA Stock Cars and Modifieds when track championships will decided in the three classes. Also on the card will be a Pit Stop Challenge.

Tyler Whalen chalked up another IMCA Sport Compact win at CJ Speedway Friday night,  his eleventh of the year. Whalen took the lead from his dad, Bill Whalen, on lap six and never looked back. The win increased his lead in the point standings giving him a 37 point lead over James Roose, 596 to 559. The top five also include Bill Whalen with 557, John Whalen 547 and Merv Chandler 354.

Troy Phillpott,  took the lead from his front row start in the twelve car, twelve lap mod lite season championship feature and went on to pull away from the field to get his sixth feature win this year.

Although Phillpott won the race,  Rob Guss would take the track championship  honors. Guss held a twenty point lead going into the Mod Lite season championship night and his third place feature finish clinched him the title with 589 points.  Phillpott finished second in the points  race with  571 followed by Evan Epperson with 507, Michael Dominguest 473 and Jonathan Huston with 37.

Fifteen Stock Cars took to the track for the IMCA Stock Car feature and again provided plenty of close racing for the fans. Jeremy Tompkisn took the early lead before giving it up to Kirk Kinsley on lap three of the fifteen lap race. Kinsley  would stay out in front pullinq away from the field as a battle for second would go on behind him between Tad Payne and Brett Timmerman. Kinsley took the checkered flag by a large margin in the flag to flag race for his first win this year. Payne would finish second and Timmerman took third. Cole Simmons leads the stock car point race with one week to go leading Tad Payne 524 to 518. Kinsley follows in third with 509, Dave Hemsted has 501 and John Hemsted is fifth in the points with 488.

Steve Stewart took the lead on lap three of the fifteen lap modified feature pulling away early on. A late race caution  would close the field  with Alex Buffington and Scott Fridley running second and third. Stewart would hold his lead after the restart and go on to take the checkered flag for the eleventh time this season as Fridley passed Buffington with two laps to go to finish second. Stewart holds a 22 point lead over Tim Sands going into the final night of racing this week 629 to 607. Mark Winkel follows in third with 590.

Jay Johnson took the lead from his front row start and was never seriously challenged as he went on to take the checkered flag in the 30 lap $1000 to win feature. Jeff Guengerich would follow in second and Tom Goble would move into third mid race to finish third.

Wapello’s Jay Chenoweth held a thirteen point lead over Tom Goble going in to the nights racing. With Goble’s second place finish and Chenoweth’s 8 place finish in the feature race, Chenoweth had enough points  to edge out Goble for the track championship by 5 points, 336 to 331.
